This paper reports on an analysis of Korean and German literature which dealt with division and reunification. First of all, this paper examines the perception of division and reunification reflected in recent Korean literature and discusses its limitation and significance. For the Korean literature examination, The Empire of Light by Kim young ha and A Private Life of a country by Lee Eung joon were chosen. Both novels are written by Korean writers who didn't experience war and division at first hand. They all perceive reunification and the future of it as 'dystopia'. On the other hand, this paper focuses on literature in German, a country analogous to Korea, which had experienced division but accomplished reunification in 1990. Many works of German writers reflect the experience of division and reunification. Among them, a novel Wie es Leuchtet by a East German writer Thomas Brussig and Leibhaftig written by Christa Wolf were compared. Both writers grew up in East Germany, experiencing socialist and capitalistic society at the same time. Also the two writers represent young and old generation in East German society respectively. They project various issues that the reunified Germany faces, based on their life experience. By comparing novels from two countries that share similar historical memories, this paper tries to view our realities of division in multilateral perspectives. The ultimate goal of this research, therefore, is to propose seeking directions of reunification and its future through this process.

이 연구는 분단과 통일을 다룬 한국과 독일의 문학작품을 분석하고 있다. 먼저 최근 한국문학작품에 반영된 분단과 통일에 대한 인식을 살펴보고, 한계와 의미를 논할 것이다. 한국작품으로는 김영하의 소설󰡔빛의 제국󰡕과 이응준의 소설 󰡔국가의 사생활󰡕을 선정했다. 두 작품은 모두 전쟁과 분단을 직접 체험하지 않은 한국 작가의 소설이다. 두 작가는 모두 분단과 통일 이후의 미래를 ‘디스토피아’로 인식하고 있다. 다른 한편으로 한국과 유사하게 분단을 겪고, 1990년에 통일을 이룩한 독일문학을 주목했다. 독일은 통일이 된 후 20여년이 지났지만 아직도 그 후유증을 겪고 있다. 많은 독일 작가들의 작품에는 분단과 통일의 경험이 반영되어 있다. 그 주 동독 출신 작가인 토마스 브루시히의 소설 󰡔Wie es Leuchtet󰡕와 크리스타 볼프의 소설 󰡔Leibhaftig󰡕을 비교대상으로 삼았다. 두 작가는 동독에서 성장했으며 사회주의와 자본주의 사회를 동시에 경험한 작가들이다. 또한 두 사람은 동독의 신세대와 구세대를 상징하는 작가이기도 하다. 두 작가는 모두 자신의 경험을 바탕으로 통일 이후 독일이 겪는 여러 문제점을 소설로 형상화하고 있다. 유사한 역사적 기억을 지닌 두 나라의 작가들의 소설을 비교하면서 우리의 분단현실을 다각적으로 바라보고자 한다. 이러한 작업을 통해서 통일과 미래에 대한 모색을 제안하는 것이 본 연구의 궁극적인 목적이다.
