This paper presents an essay-style study to suggest a new direction for researches on classical novels in the era of cultural content. Previous studies on connections between classical novels and cultural content are significant for leading an unexplored field, but they remained at the stage of combining classical novels with cultural content in parallel at the material level. Turning classical novels into cultural content should involve a chemical combination to re-recreate classical novels in digital media, which means the methodology should shift toward the perspective of "classical novels+media+technology(IT)" convergence so that classical novels can be accepted and changed, combining with new media and update their aspects, making a conversation with the public today. The present study suggested "text interpretation with an emphasis on presentness," "expansion of the research scope" and "classical novel storytelling according to media conversion" as new directions for researches on classical novels. The study especially proposed to take advantage of transmedia storytelling to investigate classical novels and cultural content from the perspective of fusion. Analyzing the fusion of classical novels and cultural content from the perspective of transmedia storytelling can help to figure out various interactions in the processes of derivation and division of the original text, combination with media, and creation and acceptance. Classical novels are updating their aspects, breathing with the public in the field of culture. It will be difficult to exclude them from the research scope as the genre outside the individual departments of science. The right attitude for researchers to accept the changes of the times involves recognizing that classical novels are being accepted and changed with their life force of presentness and investigating their values.

본고는 문화콘텐츠 시대에 고전소설 연구의 새로운 방향을 제시하고자 한 시론적(試論的) 성격의 글이다. 기존의 고전소 설과 문화콘텐츠 연계에 대한 연구는 미개척분야를 선도한 의의를 갖지만 소재적 차원에서 고전소설과 문화콘텐츠를 병 렬적으로 결합하는데 그치고 말았다. 고전소설의 문화콘텐츠화는 디지털 미디어 안에서 고전소설을 재창조하는 화학적 결합이다. 따라서 ‘고전소설+매체+기술(IT)’의 융합이라는 관점으로 연구방법론을 바꿔야 한다. 그래야만 고전소설이 새 로운 매체와 결합하면서 수용․변주되고, 오늘날 대중과 대화하며 자신의 모습을 갱신하는 과정을 포착할 수 있다. 본고에서는 새로운 고전소설 연구 방향으로 ‘현재성을 강조한 텍스트 해석’, ‘연구 범위의 확장’, ‘매체전환에 따른 고전소 설 스토리텔링’ 등을 제시하였다. 특히 고전소설과 문화콘텐츠를 융합의 관점에서 연구하기 위해서 트랜스미디어 스토리 텔링(transmedia storytelling)을 적용해야 한다고 제안하였다. 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링 관점으로 고전소설과 문화콘텐 츠의 융합을 분석하면 원작의 파생과 분화, 미디어와 결합, 창작과 수용 과정에 나타나는 다양한 상호작용을 파악할 수 있다. 고전소설은 문화 현장에서 대중과 호흡하며 자신의 모습을 갱신하고 있다. 이를 개별 분과 학문의 영역 밖의 장르라고 연 구 범위에서 배제해서는 곤란하다. 고전소설이 현재적 생명력을 갖고 수용․변주되고 있음을 인정하고, 그 가치를 탐구하 는 것이 시대 변화를 수용한 올바른 연구방향일 것이다.
