This paper is intended to analyze the manuscripts entitled “La Vie et martyre de saint Denis et ses compagnons (BNF, fr. 2090-2092, lat.13836)”, published in the quarter of the 14th Century in France, in the dimension of formation of the French national sentiment around the cult of Saint-Denis. Saint Denis has been the patron saint of the French Dynasty since the King Dagobert I. From that time, the relationship between the abbey of Saint-Denis and the French kingship is consolidated and the abbey functioned like a depository of dynastic memory: necropolis and history. With formation of the State in France in the beginning of the 14th Century, the role of the abbey and of Saint Denis was transformed from the familial and the dynastic to the national as inseverable. The landmark of this evolution is the hagiography of saint Denis demanded by Philip IV the Fair and dedicated to Philip V the Long, which connect the hagiography to the dynastic and national history of France. The bilingualism of the Latin and the French, as well as the layout, the arrangement between scripts and images present well the royal intention aiming practical circulation and diffusion of the text. The successful diffusion of this text is proved by some epics about Saint Denis and French Kings, created in the second half of the 14th Century and diffused among the people, and recited in streets of Paris at high tide of national sentiment and anti-anglicism. This phenomenon will be an example of interaction between making-history and formation of national sentiment.

본 논문은 프랑스 국립도서관에 소장중인 “성 디오니시오스(생 드니)의 생애와 순교 및 그의 동료들(Vie et martyre de saint Denis et ses compagnons (BNF, fr. 2090-2092, lat.13836))”이라는 제목의 14세기 초 수서본을 성 디오니시오스 숭배와 관련한 프랑스 민족감정의 형성이라는 차원에서 분석하는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 다고베르트 1세 이래로 성 디오니시오스는 프랑스 왕조의 수호성인이었다. 이 당시부터 생드니 수도원과 프랑스 왕권 간의 관계는 매우 긴밀해졌고 수도원은 납골당과 왕조사가 보여주는 바와 같이 왕조를 위한 기억의 보관소로 기능하였다. 그러다가 14세기 초 국가체제가 형성되어 나가면서 수도원과 성 디오니시오스의 역할은 왕조와 가문적인 성격에서 국가적인 성격으로 변화하게 된다. 이러한 변화의 지표가 바로 필리프 4세가 주문하고 필리프 5세에게 헌정된 성 디오니시오스 성인전으로 이것은 성자전에다가 프랑스의 역사를 긴밀한 관계로 연결시키고 있다. 라틴어와 프랑스어의 이중언어사용은 물론 글과 이미지의 배치 방식등은 텍스트의 실질적인 유포를 위한 왕권의 의도를 잘 보여준다. 14세기 후반, 민족감정과 반영주의가 고무되고 있던 시점에 성 디오니시오스와 프랑스왕들을 주제로 한 서사시들이 새롭게 등장하여 사람들에게 퍼지고 파리 길거리에서 낭송되었다는 사실은 이러한 과정을 잘 보여주고 있다. 이러한 현상은 역사만들기와 민족감정 형성 사이의 상호작용과 관련한 한 사례가 될 수 있다.
