The Byzantines seldom sentenced the heretics to death penalty. Historians have called this Byzantine “tolerance” in historiography considering following the critical characteristics in treatment of heterodoxies in Byzantine society. Through the investigation of the Bogomils trial in ca. 1099, two important conditions are to be noted for the understanding of Byzantine views of heterodoxy: the City is filled with a variety of people and the heresiologists was offering guidebooks on heresy. This paper sheds lights on the Byzantine view of their heterodoxy caused by such socio-religious attitude toward the doctrinal defendants.

비잔티움인들은 종종 이단에 대해 사형선고를 내리고는 했다. 역사가들은 기존의 역사연구에서 이러한 비잔티움식의 “관용”을 비잔티움 사회가 이교를 다루는 데 나타나는 성격들에 따라 생각해 왔다. 1099년경의 보고밀파 재판에 대한 연구는 이교에 대한 비잔티움의 관점을 이해하기 위해 두 가지 중요한 조건들을 살펴봐야한다는 점을 보여준다. 이는 비잔티움시가 다양한 인민들로 이루어져 있었다는 사실, 그리고 이단론자(이단연구자)들은 이단에 대한 지침서들을 제공받았다는 사실이다. 본 논문은 교리 방어자들에 대한 이와 같은 사회종교적 태도에서 기인하는, 비잔티움 당국의 이단들에 대한 관점을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 삼는다.
