This paper has studied the relationship between preaching and audience. To reveal the relationship, the researcher analyzed randomly selected 30 midweek for believers and 30 weekend sermons for seekers. Those sermons were delivered by Bill Hybels at Willow Creek Community Church from 1995 until 2005. The researcher then compared the homiletical characteristics revealed in the sermons delivered to these two groups in order to identify their commonalities and differences. The study revealed several characteristic commonalities between midweek and weekend sermons. First, Hybels delivered more topical than textual sermons. Second, he preferred inductive to deductive arrangement. Third, this preacher concluded his sermons by giving clear and direct application with the feeling of finality. Fourth, he connected one part to another of the sermon with a smooth transition. The comparative analysis of Hybels's midweek and weekend sermons also revealed some characteristic dissimilarities as well. First, Hybels paraphrased Bible verses for the seekers in the weekend services. Second, he adapted the proportion between introduction, discussion, and conclusion, depending upon the audience's spiritual condition. While the average ratio between introduction, discussion, and conclusion in the midweek sermons was 12:80:8, Hybels lengthened the introduction and made the ratio 19:73:8 in the weekend sermons in order to persuade a doubting, skeptical, and even hostile audience.

Hybels의 주중설교와 주말설교의 비교분석은 몇 가지 차이점 또한 밝혀냈다. 첫째, Hybels는 주말예배에 모인 구도자들을 위해 성경구절을 직접인용하기 보다 의역했다. 둘째, 그는 청중의 영적 수준과 상태에 따라 서론, 본론, 결론 간의 비율을 적절히 변형하였다. 주중설교에서의 서론, 본론, 결론의 평균비율은 12:80:8인데 반해, Hybels는 주말설교에서 서론의 비율을 늘려 전체 비율을 평균 19:73:8로 만들었다. 이는 복음에 대해 의심하고 회의적이며 심지어 적대적이기까지 한 청중들을 설득하기 위한 조치로 보인다.
