Korean churches have not produced well the fruits of practical godliness in spite of their emphasis on spirituality and godliness for a long time. It is Jonathan Edwards who has influenced greatly through godly practices as a representative pastor in the church history. The actual foundation for Edwards to be able to pursue the godly life may be related with his clear understanding on God. The start of godliness to Edwards was to recognize thoroughly God as the Absolute and to respond in faith to His free gift of grace. And also the motif to live a godly life may be his certainty that everything except the eternal relationship with God cannot but a trifle matter. His experiences in the The First Great Awakening Movement were due not to the result of endless human efforts in need but to the sovereign providence of God. After experiencing the conversion Edwards made a foundation to pursue the godliness, that is the voluntary obedience through the switchover of recognition on God and man. After the conversion he was able to accept the fact that any human being is a totally corrupted being as well as every history is under the absolute sovereignty of God, since he confirmed that Creation and Salvation are the voluntary decision of the Triune God through His grace and love. Godliness, thus, is the response of the believers for the salvation and grace by the absolute sovereignty of God. Believers may be able to pursue in their lives the divine attributes revealed by God when they may enjoy the genuine fellowship with the Triune God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. If it is true that becoming indifferent to live as the people of god must be the very sign of the life being absent of the practical godliness, the current problems of Korean churches can be evaluated as the consequences of being self-proudful, not fearing of God, or/and not putting the hope in despair to God.

오랜 시간 동안 한국 교회가 영성과 경건을 강조하였음에도 제대로 실천적 경건의 열매를 맺지 못하고 있다. 교회사 가운데 경건한 실천을 통해 많은 영향을 준 대표적인 목회자 Jonathan Edwards가 있다. Edwards가 경건한 삶을 실천할 수 있었던 실질적인 기초는 하나님에 대한 이해와 관련되어 있다. 하나님을 절대자로 철저히 인식하고 값없이 받은 은혜에 믿음으로 반응하는 것이 경건의 출발이었다. 또한 하나님과의 영원한 관계를 제외한 모든 것이 하찮은 것에 불과하다는 확신이 그가 경건한 삶을 사는 동기가 된 것이다. 그가 경험한 1차 대각성운동은 인간의 끊임없는 노력에 의한 결과이기 보다는 하나님의 필요에 의한 주권적 섭리였으며, 회심을 겪은 후 Edwards는 하나님과 인간에 대한 인식의 전환을 겪음으로써 자발적 순종인 경건을 추구할 수 있는 토대를 마련하게 되었다. 창조뿐 아니라 구원도 삼위 하나님의 은혜와 사랑을 통해 이루어진 자발적 결단임을 확인하게 된 Edwards는 회심한 이후에 모든 역사를 하나님의 절대주권으로 인정하였음은 물론 인간이 전적으로 타락한 존재라는 사실도 받아들이게 되었다. 경건은 하나님의 절대 주권적 구원과 은혜에 대한 성도의 반응이며, 성령의 내주하심으로 삼위 하나님과 참된 교제를 누리게 될 때, 성도는 하나님께서 계시해 주신 하나님의 성품들을 자신의 삶에서 추구할 수 있게 된다. 하나님 앞에서 하나님의 백성답게 사는 것에 대해 무관심해지는 것이 실천적 경건이 부재된 삶이라고 한다면, 결국 오늘날 한국 교회의 문제는 자만하여 하나님을 두려워하지 않거나 낙심하여 하나님께 소망을 두고 있지 않은 상태에 기인한다고 볼 수 있을 것이다.
