Jung’s analytical psychology is a study thatbelongs to depth psychology, and the mostimportant concept to understand the mental worldof human is unconsciousness. In Jung’s analyticalpsychology, the symbol is an element thatconnects such unconsciousness withconsciousness and art is one of the symbolicsystems in which mentality of human inner sidecan be embodied as a visual representation. Inthis study, with an attempt to contemplate thesymbol which appeared in Charles Keeping’spicture book ‘Through the Window’ in theperspective of C.G. Jung’s analytical psychology,we are to look into the unconsciousnessdisplayed in his inner side through the symbolicimage. Therefore we looked into the concept ofthe theory and the symbol theory of analyticalpsychology and discussed the representationalcharacteristics of symbol prototype throughliterature researches. By looking into theunconsciousness that is displayed from his innerside through the symbolic image revealed inCharles Keeping’s ‘Through the Window’ on thefoundation of this, we investigated how personallife and experience are reproduced and embodiedto be reflected to the work. For structuralinterpretation of the picture book, space, color,line symbol theory were applied and they wereanalyzed in connection with the representationalcharacteristics of symbol prototype and theauthor’s personal overall life. As a result of thestudy, it could be confirmed that the analyticalpsychological perspective could be applied as amethodical principle to analyzing in depth therepresentational characteristics of the symbol andthe author’s inner world revealed in the work.

융의 분석심리학은 심층심리학에 속하는 연구로 인간의 정신세계를 이해하는데 가장 중요한 개념은 무의식이 다. 융의 분석심리학에서 상징은 이러한 무의식을 의식과 연결하는 요소로 예술은 인간 내면의 심리가 시각적 표상으로 형상화 될 수 있는 하나의 상징체계이다. 본 연구에서는 찰스키핑의 그림책 ‘창 너머’에 나타난 상징 을 융의 분석심리학 관점에서 고찰해 봄으로써 상징적 이미지를 통해 그의 내면에서 표출되어지는 무의식을 살펴보았다. 이에 분석심리학 이론의 개념과 상징이론을 살펴보고, 문헌 연구를 통해 상징 원형의 표상적 특성에 관하여 논하였다. 이를 바탕으로 찰스키핑의 ‘창 너머’에 드러난 상징적 이미지를 통해 그의 내면에서 표출되어지는 무의식을 살펴봄으로써 개인의 삶과 경험이어떻게 재현되고 형상화되어 작품에 투영되는가에 대해 알아보았 다. 그림책의 구조적 해석을 위해 공간,색채, 선 상징이론을 적용하였으며, 상징 원형의 표상적 특징과 작가 개인의 총체적인 삶과 결부지어 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 작품에 드러난 상징의 표상적 특성과 작가의 내면세 계를 심층적으로 분석하는 것에분석심리학적 관점이 하나의 방법적 원리로 적용 가능함을 확인할 수 있었다.
