The purpose of this article is to compare transhumanism and Christian humanism from a Christian theological perspective based on a Niebuhrian understanding of man. The prime question in this task is what it means to be human. In order to answer the question specifically in its purpose,this article examines the nature of man in transhumanism driven by modern advanced technologies such as genetics,nanotechnology, and robotics, and the nature of man in Christian humanism based on the Bible professing that man created by God necessarily dwells in creatureliness and all human achievements are attributed to God the Creator. In doing so, it seeks to make the final step of this examination not only the comparison of the two contrastive understandings of man, but also the provision of a Christian theological response to the challenge of the man- oriented transhumanism.

본 논문의 목적은 인간의 본성에 대한 라인홀드 니버의 기독교적 안목을 바탕으로 트랜스휴머니즘과 크리스천휴머니즘 을 비교 연구하는 것이다. 이 연구의 출발은 ‘인간이 된다는 것은 과연 무엇을 의미하는가’라는근본적인 질문으로부터 시작된다. 본 논문은 이 근본적인 질문에 구체적으로 답하기 위하여 첫째로 유전자학, 나노기술, 로봇공학과 같은 현대 과학기술 의 발전에 힘입어 나타난트랜스휴머니즘의 인간이해를 분석하고, 둘째로 이와는 근본적으로 다른인간이해, 즉 하나님 에 의해 지어진 인간은 필연적으로 그의 창조됨 속에서 살아가며, 인간의 모든 업적은 창조자 하나님으로부터 말미암는 다는 기독교의 성서적 인간이해를 분석한다. 이러한 연구 과정 속에서 이 논문이 최종적으로 의도하는 바는 두 첨예한 인간이해의 비교 분석만이 아니라, 오직 인간 중심의 기술과학으로부터태동한 현대 트랜스휴머니즘의 도전에 대한 기독교 인간이해의 반응 및 그신학적 대응이다.
