Adequate missionary training is necessary for the advancement of the Korean missions movement. The Korean church still faces many challenges in regard to missionary training. The goal of missionary training should not merely be to transfer knowledge or to help acquire certain cultural adjustment skills. Rather, missionary training should be both holistic and integral. It takes as its object the whole person, making the transformation and growth of knowledge,behavior, and attitude its central goal. A community-oriented training program is the best way to implement such a process, because it requires formal, non-formal, and informal education methods. In addition, missionary training should embrace whole families. This is because the family is the most basic and important unit of ministry in foreign cultures. Furthermore, while missionary training is conducted for a limited period, it should aim to influence the whole life of its trainees. Missionary training should help trainees establish appropriate ministry philosophies and to discover their individual callings and giftedness. Two of the most important elements of missionary training is the formation of a curriculum that reflects a philosophy geared toward integral training and the acquisition of dedicated trainers who are able to put such a curriculum into practice. In this respect, the experiences of GMTC, which has been committed to training Korean missionaries for the past 25 years, will provide valuable reference to many who are interested in missionary training.

한국 선교운동이 발전하기 위해서는 선교사들을 적절하게 훈련하는일이 필요하다. 한국교회는 선교사 훈련에 있어 아 직도 발전시켜야 할 많은 과제를 안고 있다. 선교사 훈련의 목표는 단순히 지식을 전달하거나 몇가지 타문화 적응 기술 을 익히는 데 그치는 것이 되어서는 안 된다. 선교사 훈련은 총체적(holistic)이고 전인적(integral)인 훈련이 되어야 한다 . 그것은 전 인격(whole person)을 포괄하여 지식과 행동과 태도의 변화와 성장을 목표로 한다. 여기에는 공식적(formal), 비공식적(non-formal), 비형식적(informal) 교육 훈련방법이 동원되어야 하는데 이것은 공동체를 통한 훈련을 통해 가장 잘 성취된다. 또한 선교훈련은 전 가족(whole family)을 포함해야 한다. 왜냐하면 가족이야말로 타문 화권 사역의 가장 중요한 기초단위가 되기 때문이다. 나아가 선교훈련은 일정 기간 실시되지만 전 생애(whole life)에 영 향을 줄 수 있는 것이어야 한다. 선교훈련은 훈련생들로하여금 올바른 사역철학의 정립과 각자의 소명과 은사를 발견하 는 데 도움을 주어야 한다. 선교사 훈련에 있어 가장 중요한 두 가지 요소를 들자면 그것은 전인적훈련을 실현하고자 하는 철학을 담은 커리큘럼을 형성하는 것과 그것을 실행에 옮길 수 있는 적합하고도 헌신된 훈련자를 확보하는 일이다. 이런 면에서 지난 25년 동안 한국 선교사들을 훈련하는 데 매진해온 한국선교훈련원(GMTC)의 경험은 선교훈련을 하고자 하는 이들에게 많은 참고 가 될것이다.
