This paper studies how TV historical dramas have described the image of women in history narrative, changed with the times, based on the assumption that the TV historical drama is a genre of historical narrative. The study focuses on Empress Chun Chu(千秋太后) and Chang Hee-Bin(張禧嬪). To this end, whether the TV historical drama is a genre of historical narrative or not was reviewed first. History and historical novels describe the history on paper, while TV historical dramas tell the historical stories using pictures. When TV historical dramas where conversations of characters fill the gaps in incomplete historical records are perceived as a narrative rather than the fact, TV historical dramas combining the fiction and the non-fiction can be recognized as a genre of historical narrative. More notably, there are few historical materials and records on women, who were excluded from male-dominated historical records. TV historical dramas, based on historical imagination, are one of the most ideal genres filling the gaps in the historical narrative that is poor in contents about women. TV historical dramas, which are reproduced by de-historicizing the stories of women that lack identity compared to the stories of men instead of anti-historicizing them, tell the new feminist history. The TV historical dramas reproducing lives of women reflect women's lives in the modern times. From this point of view, this paper intended to verify that the status of women, changed with the times, has been reflected to TV historical dramas, with a focus on Empress Chun Chu of KBS aired in 2009 and Chang Hee-Bin steadily produced and aired over time.

본 논문은 TV 역사드라마의 변화 속에서 역사서에 기록된 여성들이 시대 변화에 따라 어떤 여성상으로 역사드라마에 그려졌는지를 천추태후와 장희빈을 중심으로 고찰해 본 글이다. 이를 위해 먼저 TV 역사드라마가 역사를 서술할 수 있는 한 장르가 될 수 있는가 아닌가 하는 문제를 검토보고자 하였다. 역사나 역사소설은 ‘페이퍼(paper)’를 통해 역사를 그리고 있지만 역사드라마는 ‘영상(picture)’ 이라는 이미지를 사용하여 역사 이야기를 펼쳐내는 장르이다. 불친절한 역사서의 기록을 등장 인물의 대화로 메꿔가는 역사드라마를 ‘사실(fact)’로 보기보다 하나의 ‘이야기(narrative)’로 이해한다면, 사실과 픽션이 혼재된 역사드라마는 또 다른 역사 서술의 장르로 인정해 볼 수도 있을 것이다. 특히 남성중심의 역사 기록에서 배제된 여성은 역사 기록에서 사료나 기록들이 양적으로 매우 적은데, 역사적 상상력을 바탕으로 한 역사드라마는 빈곤한 여성 역사의 간극을 채울 수 있는 아주 적합한 장르이다. 역사 기록에서 남성에 비해 그 주체성이 결여된 여성의 이야기를 ‘반역사성’이 아닌 ‘탈역사성’을 통한 역사드라마의 재구성은 새로운 여성주의적 역사이며, 그 삶이 재현된 역사드라마에는 현대를 살아가는 여성의 삶이 투영되어 있다. 이러한 시각을 바탕으로 본 논문은 2009년 KBS에서 방영된 <천추태후>와 시대별로 끊임없이 제작된 <장희빈>을 중심으로 시대에 따라 달라진 여성의 위상이 역사드라마에 투영되고 있음을 밝혀보고자 하였다.
