This research at first reviews on the issues related on 『Moderation』out of and tries to highlight their characteristics and aspects. An object of this research is putting its focus on the letters and admonishment poetries which directly mention on 『Moderation』. Myungje‘s view on study shows the flexible attitude on the contemporary situation and conditions but at the same time warns on the harmful effects of paying attention on immoderation. These views are well described in his letters and poetries mentioning on 『Moderation』. Myungje focuses more on the value of 『Moderation』as ‘The approaching tool of Do(道)’ than on the analysis on the detailed aspects of 『Moderation』. In addition, he concretely suggests the attitude on the study in his admonishment poetry, and quotes on the major terminologies of 『Moderation』in order to effectively impress the sense of subject. Especially, he emphasizes on several virtues of 『Moderation』and ‘Practical mind(實心)’. In conclusion, this research provides the motivation to look at an aspect of Myungje's thoughts through the research on his views of study and 『Moderation』.

본 연구는 명재 윤증의 문집인 『명재유고』에 수록된 저술 중에 『중용』과 관련된 논의를 살펴보고, 그 양상과 특징 을 고찰하기 위해 시도되었다. 연구 대상은 명재의 작품 중에서 『中庸』과 관련된 논의가 직접적으로 드러나는 書와, 勸誡詩를 중심으로 삼았다. 명재의 학문관은 당대 시대 상황 및 여건에 대해 유연한 태도를 보이면서도 말단에 주목하는 폐단을 경계하는 특징을 보인다. 이러한 그의 학문관은 『중용』을 인용한 서간이나 시에서도 잘 드러난다. 명재는 『중용』의 의의를 세부적인 항목을 평가하는 데에 두기보다는 ‘道를 밝히는 근원’으로서의 가치를 강조하였다. 또한, 후학들을 권계하는 시작품에서는 학문하는 태도를 구체적으로 제시하면서, 주제 의식을 효과적으로 전달하는 데 에 『중용』과 관련된 주요 용어들을 인용하였다. 특히 『중용』의 여러 덕목들과 함께 ‘實心’을 중요시하는 태도를 보 인다. 본 연구는 명재의 학문관과 중용관을 통해 그의 사상적 특징의 한 국면을 살필 수 있게 하는 계기를 마련하였다.
