In this paper, I tried to analyze several memorials to the King during the mid-term of Chosun dynasty. This kind of articles have its own patterns and forms in motivation and rhetorics. These patterns are especially remarkable when the article is written by the King's request about handling natural disaster. For the reason, I tried to take theoretical approach to investigate them delicately. As an academical attempt, I analyzed two cases of King’s instructions for address a memorial to himself. The one is In-jo(仁祖)’s instruction in July 26th 1628, and the other is Hyo-jong(孝宗)’s instruction in May 1 1657. I analyzed 8 articles which were written following the King's instruction. I focused to look into its rhetoric and intention. Because, each article showed its own character depending on each writer's writing ability and individuality. As a way of analyzing those articles, I focused on following three points. First, I tried to find the meaning of emphasizing the casual relationship between disaster and personnel management. Second, I tried to identify the level and means of denunciation. Third, I tried to comprehend the format of introductory, historical allegory, and case presentation. This paper might be an attempt of analyzing prose, I hope this leads following researches.

상소문은 왕조시대에 신하가 왕에게 정치적 견해를 건의하는 공용문으로서, 유형화된 동기에 의해 저작되는 것이어서 애초에 관습적인 요소가 매우 큰 글이다. 특히 災異라는 특정한 사안을 두고 내린 왕의 求言에 응하 여 작성되는 응지상소문은 관습성이 더 클 수밖에 없다. 본고의 목적은 이러한 응지상소문을 어떤 방법으로 연구할 수 있을지 모색하는 데에 있다. 재이의 원인을 왕의 失政에서 찾고 이를 통해 하늘이 내리는 권고를 들 어야 한다는 漢代 이래의 災異論에 입각한 구언제도는 왕권을 견제하려는 신하들의 정치적 목적에 의해서 왕 조의 존속과 함께 오랫동안 유지되었다. 이에 따라 재이가 있을 때 왕이 내리는 구언교지와 그에 응하여 작성 되는 응지상소는 대개 형식과 주제가 정형화되어 갔다. 그러나 이러한 관습적인 저작 배경과 형식 위에서도 개별 응지상소문 가운데에는 작가의 역량과 개성이 담겨 있고 다양한 수사 방식을 통해 설득력을 높인 작품들 이 있다. 이에 대한 탐색의 시론으로서 본고는 우선 응지상소문이 지니는 관습의 실체를 밝히고, 개별 작품에 서 이러한 관습을 지키고 이용하면서 어떤 효과를 노리는지, 산문 일반의 수사법이 응지상소의 관습 내에서 어떻게 동원되는지 살폈다. 구체적 방법으로, 구언의 진정성을 요구하고 재이와 인사의 인과 관계를 강조하는 것이 어떤 의미를 지니는지, 왕의 잘못을 지적하는 수위와 방식은 어떠한지, 서두 구성, 역사적 전거 제시 및 대비, 인상적 사례 예시 등의 일반적 수사가 어떻게 동원되는지 등을 조명하였다.
