This article is about the issue of generation argument that was presented in the Choi Myung-Ik’s novels, and . First, the generation argument in the late 1930s and the position of Choi in the argument were addressed. Since Choi was a writer of new genera tion, he released the novels representing the new generation. But, in fact, he denied his belonging to whichever side of the old or new one. Then, the generation issue in the novel was addressed. In this novel, the main character Mun-Il doesn't belong to anywhere, eith er the old generation or new generation, and wishes to live upon his own conscience. This expressed what Choi was thinking of during the course of generation argument on the level of a fiction. In , the author expressed his reflection about generation issue by speaking through the main character Hyun-Il. Even though Choi was a new generation writer, he didn't take one- sided position of new generation, and considered the possible way of the literary circle. Also, he showed his critical mind that we should plan our future by carefully considering the views of old generation. Like this way, Choi tried to go beyond the limit of the generation argument with the two novels.

이 논문은 ｢역설｣과 ｢폐어인｣에 나타난 세대논쟁의 문제에 대해 다루고 있다. 먼저, 1930년대 후반에 있었던 세대논쟁에 대해 살펴보고, 그 속에서 최명익의 위치에 대 해 살폈다. 다음으로 ｢역설｣과 ｢폐 어인｣에 나타난 세대문제에 대해 다루었다. ｢역설｣에서 주인공 문일은 신세대와 구세대 중 그 어디에 도 소속되지 않고 자신의 양심대로 살아가기를 희망하였다. ｢폐어인｣에서는 주인공 현일을 내세워 세대문제에 대해 고민했다. 최명익은 신세대 작가였음에도 불구하고 일방적으로 신세대 작가의 편에 만 서지 않고 신구세대를 아울러 문단이 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 고민하였다. 그리고 구세대의 입장 을 존중하여 앞날을 잘 설계해야 한다는 문제의식 또한 드러내고 있다. 이렇듯 최명익은 소설 공간을 통해 신세대와 구세대의 도식적 구분을 넘어서고자 하였다. 그리고 이러한 세대문제가 문학에 국한 되지 않고 포괄적인 삶의 방식이나 태도의 영역으로 확장되기를 희구하였다. 급격하게 변화되어가는 사회에서 구세대와 신세대의 삶의 방식은 어떻게 달라져야 하고, 세대 간의 관계는 어떤 것이 되어야 할 것인가를 모색하려 했는데, ｢역설｣과 ｢폐ᅌᅥ인｣이라는 소설 속에 그 고민의 과정과 결과를 담았 다고 본다.
