While there are not many recorded tales about the birth of Toegye, the few that do exist clearly shows how the public identifies with Toe gye. Additionally, is the stories are important evidence in understanding the people’s interest in Toegye. First, dreams play a prominent role in the birth tale of Toegye, which is typical to birth tales in this period rather than the imulgyohon (litera lly means a marriage with an alien body) characteristic that was popul ar earlier. The literature narratives about the birth of Toegye include a Taoist dream that represent the real world. However, according to this tale, Toegye’s grandfather had relationship with a Taoist fairy. This is important because it is the only relationship about his grandfather that has been written, but it also does not have direct connection with Toe gye. Moreover, in Toegye’s birth tale, geomancy is also frequently found, which is typical in literature narratives. In general, unofficial historical works, such as ‘Cheongguyadam’, contain a number of geomancy storie s. Perhaps these kinds of records might have influenced oral transmissi on. Nevertheless, geomancy, which is related to Toegye, appears in only oral tales. This is because there are not many records about Toegye. This fact may shows that there is little interest toward Toegye. Above this, several stories about making Toegye’s pen name, or precognitive dream of his birth, have also been collected. But stories about Toegye’s birth and his growth are very rare. This may be inter preted as Toegye’s literature did not have a big impact on ordinary peo ple, which explains why Toegye’s birth tale has limited contents and why transmission is rare. This paper investigates the meaning and transmission of Toegye’s birth tale. But the development of varied discussions was limited becau se there is limited information and the narrative structure is not so rich. However, Toegye’s birth tale provides important information about how people accept this outstanding figure and how they talk about him. The study results show areas to be investigated in terms of the character tales that have not been actively transmitted, such as Toegye’s birth tale, as a way of expressing or showing the people’s interest.

퇴계선생과 관련한 설화 중에서 탄생담은 그다지 많이 전승되지는 않았지만 다른 인물군과는 차별된 내용을 갖고 있다는 점에서 주목된다. 이러한 차별화된 전략의 이유는 무엇일까 하는 의문에서 본 논 의를 시작한다. 먼저 퇴계의 탄생은 일반적인 인물 탄생과정에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 이물교혼적 특징은 사라지고, 단순한 풍수나 태몽을 이용해서 인물의 탄생을 설명하려는 시도를 보인다. 문제는 문헌설화와 구비 설화의 전승내용이 차이를 보여주는 점에 있다. 특히 문헌설화에 집중적으로 수록되어 있는 음택풍 수적인 내용이 구비설화로만 채록된 특징이 보인다. 문헌설화의 경우에는 적강소설과 같이 선녀와 관계를 맺은 조부에 의해서 퇴계가 탄생할 수 있게 되었음을 설명하고 있고 퇴계와 직접적인 관계에 놓인 내용이 아니다. 구비설화에 주로 나타나는 표현군은 음택풍수라는 점이며, 그 중에서도 조부가 남의 명당을 차지하 여 퇴계가 탄생할 수 있음을 설명하려는 시도가 보인다는 점에서 흥미롭다. 이런 방식으로의 설명은 퇴계의 경우에도 일반적인 명당 빼앗기를 통해서 큰 인물이 될 수 있었다고 하는 민중적인 관념이 반 영된 것이라고 하겠다. 그것은 민중의 입장에서 본다면 명당 빼앗기를 통해서 부자가 된 인물이나, 퇴계와 같은 대학자도 같은 탄생의 이유를 갖고 있다는 것을 알려주는 것이다. 결국 퇴계가 학문 세 계에서는 탁월한 역량을 보여준 학자이지만, 민중들의 시각에서는 다른 인물의 탄생과 별반 차이가 없다는 점을 보여준 것이라고 하겠다. 문제는 이런 내용을 설명하기 위해서는 보다 많은 채록본이 있어서 그런 사실을 명확하게 할 필요가 있다는 점이다. 이에 대해서는 퇴계설화 탄생담의 한계라는 점에서 현재적인 상황으로는 극복하기 어렵다. 그럼에도 불구하고 민중들의 관심거리로 자리잡지 못한 인물들의 탄생담이 문헌설화의 내용 과 다르다는 점을 확인함으로서, 당대 민중들의 갖고 있던 인물의 관심방식을 살펴보는데 유효한 정 보를 퇴계 탄생담은 제공한다는 의의가 있다고 하겠다.
