There are two versions of the printed book of . One is written in Korean letters and the other in Chines characters. Many of Korean ancient novels were written in Korean letters. When there is a printed book with Chinese characters, in many cases the manuscript of that in Chinese also exists. However, we do not have a Chinese character manuscript of , but only a printed book written in Chines characters. Therefore I researched the printed books of the texts written in Korean and Chinse, and the manuscript written in Korean. As a result, I proved that the printed book of Chinse character text is different from any other texts, and that this text is the translation from the Korean manuscript. I assert that the printed book of was translated from Korean into Chines, and the original text created by the author was primarily written in Korean.

활판본으로 만들어진 고소설 중에 한문으로 현토한 현토활판본이 있다. 주로 한 문필사본이 있는 고소설의 경우 그렇게 만들었는데, <옥루몽>의 경우 한문현토활 판본이 만들어졌지만 한문필사본이 있지는 않다. 게다가 <옥루몽>의 원작이 한문 이 아닌 한글이란 주장이 제기된 상황이므로 한문현토활판본의 위상을 점검할 필 요가 생겼다. 본고에서는 ‘한문현토활판본’과 한글활판본인 ‘신문관본’, 그리고 善 本인 한글필사 ‘규장각본’을 비교 대조하여 한문현토활판본의 상황을 살펴보았다. 면밀한 검토를 통해 현토본은 다른 활판본인 신문관본을 대상으로 성립한 이본 이 아니라는 점과 선본인 규장각본과도 다른 이본을 모본으로 성립했음을 확인하 였다. 또한 현토본의 모본이 한문본이 아닌 한글본이라는 사실을 방증했다. 이로써 <옥루몽>의 유일한 한문본인 한문현토활판본은 근대에 들어 한글본을 대상으로 한문에 익숙한 자가 현토해서 만든 텍스트임이 밝혀졌고, 나아가 <옥루몽>의 원작이 한문이 아닌 한글일 가능성이 더 높아졌다고 할 수 있다.
