Repository is a new paradigm of academic information distribution and a platform that supports opening and sharing of research results between researchers. Currently, many universities and research institutes around the world are actively building and operating a institutional repository and it is expected to expand this trend in the future. Since 2005, Japan tried to expand the repository nationwide based on National Institute of Informatics, and, as a result, built the repository of more than 140 institutions, 16 of which are in the world’s top 100 repositories. The expansion and growth of Japan’s repository can provide useful suggestions for establishing policies in this area in Korea that is still in the early stage of building repository. This study attempts to provide basic theory for building repository expansion policy by researching the growth and current status of Japan’s repository in the last few years and examining the background.

리포지터리는 학술정보 유통의 새로운 패러다임이자 연구자간의 연구성과물에 대한 개방과 공유를 지원하는 중요한 기반 기술이다. 현재 해외의 많은 대학이나 연구소들은 그들의 기관 리포지터리를 구축하여 활발하게 운영하고 있으며 이러한 추세는 향후에 더욱 확산될 것으로 기대된다. 이에 일본은 2005년부터 국립정보학연구소(NII)를 주축으로 리포지터리의 전국적인 확산을 위해 노력해왔고 그 결과 140여개의 기관 리포지터리가 구축되었고 이들 중 16개는 세계의 Top100 리포지터리 내에 진입할 정도로 성공적으로 운영되고 있다. 이러한 일본의 리포지터리 확산과 그 성장 배경은 리포지터리 구축의 초기단계에 있는 한국의 이 분야 정책 수립에 유용한 시사점을 제공할 수 있다. 본 연구는 최근 몇 년간 일본 리포지터리의 성장 과정 및 현황을 조사하고 그 성장 배경을 검토함으로써 국내 리포지터리 확산 정책 수립을 위한 기초적인 이론을 제공하고자 한다.
