This paper is aimed at the analysis of the acceptation of Buddhism of Japan and the formation of Japanese style Buddhism from the view of religious sociology. Generally, it is said that Buddhism was localized in Japan since the Kamakura period. This paper tries to deal with the acceptation of Buddhism of Japan and the formation of Japanese style Buddhism by the viewpoint of the history of struggle between naive faith and transmitted faith. First, I take up the feature of the Mahayanist Buddhism transmitted in Japan. Second, I solve the position of Japan that accepted Buddhism in relation to the international politics situation of those days. In the next, I interpret the process of Japanese Buddhism which had been secularized from institutionalized faith system in relation to a social situation of those days. Finally, I analyze the process of Japanization of the Buddhism as an history of formation of popular religion and religious group.
