Myokonin is an earnest believer of the Jodo Shin sect of Buddhism who believes teaching of the Buddhism and practices it in their life. How was Myokonin born? Answering to this question is the first problem of this paper. As well known, the 18th wish that written in sacred book Kanmuryojyukyo has been influenced to the birth of Myokonin. I understand this 18th wish as a Buddhist version of “prophecy of universal salvation.” So I try to explain this birth of Myokonin by using sociological term ‘self-fulfiling prophecy’ of Robert K. Merton. Birth of Myokonin could be explain by ‘manifest function’ of 18th wish. On the contrary what is the ‘latent function’ of 18th wish? In other words, what kind of internal character does Myokonin have? this is the second problem. I think it is a passive ‘いただく(Given)’ mind. We can easily see in modern Japanese many phrases such as ‘いただきます(Let’s eat)’ or ‘させていただく(Let me do it).’ The passiveness mind of Myokonin would reflected in these words. Be based on the above argument, I want to solve the third problem. It is an ultimate problem whether Myokonin has a power to change society or not. To solve the problem, it is convenient to use another concept of the functionalism sociology, ‘disfunction.’There is no dought that Myokonin has a extremely passive character. The manner of Myokonin does not change in case for his family or for any influential person. In this sense, Myokonin does not seem to have a power of social reformation. But Myokonin practice the teaching of the Amida Nyorai more honest than anyone else. The person who knows Myokonin cannot but recognize it, even though priest or influential person. On the contrary, Priests and influential people are often influenced by Myokonin. It is truly ‘disfunction’ of the 18th wish. As above, it is partial understanding to see Myokonin as a conservative of the established order. In conclude we could find in Myokonin’s way of life, power of social change.

妙好人とは、浄土真宗の教えを信じ、それを生活においても実践する、熱心な信者を指す。本稿の第一の課 題は、妙好人はどのようにして生まれてきたのかという問いに答えることである。浄土の教えの中にある第 十八願が、妙好人の発生に決定的な影響を与えていることは、これまでにも語られてきたことである。第十 八願とは、󰡔大無量寿経󰡕に書かれている、全ての人が救われるとの予言である。マートンの自己成就的予言 という概念を用いることで、この第十八願の一つの機能として、妙好人が出現したことを説明することにし たい。妙好人の産出というのが、いわゆる第十八願の目に見える機能、すなわち顕在的機能だとすると、次 に取り上げたいのは、比較的目につきにくい機能についてである。それをマートンの潜在的機能という観点か ら見直すことにする。それにより、第十八願によって妙好人はどのような内面的な性格を持った人格として 作り上げられているのか、という第二の問いに答えることになろう。それを一言で言い表すなら、受動的な｢ いただく｣の精神であるといえよう。現代でも｢いただきます｣、あるいは｢させていただく｣などの言葉の中に 、その精神は生きていると見なしても良いのではないだろうか。以上のところで説明してきた、第十八願の 機能である妙好人の発生、それから外面的行動と内面的性格を議論の土台として、本稿の最終的な課題に取 り組んでみたい。妙好人は社会を変える力をもつのかどうかという、この三番目の問いに答えるためには、 機能主義社会学における逆機能の概念を用いるのが便利である。妙好人が徹底的な受動性を供えているのは 間違いない。妙好人の行動や言動は、第十八願をはじめとする浄土の教えをありのままに受け入れ、それを 実践することによってなされているからである。その態度は、家族であろうが僧侶や権力者であろうが、何 ら変わりはない。しかし、その態度が周りの人々や寺の住職から、時として疑念や反感を抱かれる場合もある のではないだろうか。それが第十八願の逆機能である。だが第十八願を遵守しているという限りにおいては 、いかなる上層の僧侶であろうが権力者であろうが、妙好人を粗雑に扱うことは許されない。かえって反感 を持った側が、妙好人に感化されてしまうことも少なくない。そのことを確認することによって、妙好人が 体制保守的であるとの性格づけが、いささか早計であることに気付かされることになろう。社会変化を可能 とする妙好人の姿が、ここに見出せるからだ。以上のことからすると、妙好人が社会を変える力を十分に有 している、というのが本稿の結論に他ならない。
