This paper is to study the grotesque beauty in Jigokuhen through the process of the confrontation between Yosihide, the painter, and the lord. The artistic beauty of Yosihide is deeply related with the comment of Tok, a poet, in the Kappa by Akutawaga in 1927. Tok, in this novel, said that “Nothing can control art. Art for art’s sake. So artists must be Kappa (Superman) that transcend Good and Evil above all”. His saying suggested that the artistic beauty that has been regarded as the human true values as well as the notion of Truth, Good, and Beauty has changed into pursuing the momentary beauty, as the artistic perfection, which was derived from the grotesque and the unnaturalness in chaos and disorder, not from the balance and the harmony in Truth and Good. This grotesque beauty is beyond ordinary world. This can be obtained from the not-human and unsocial nature while discarding the all human things. From this point of view, the grotesque beauty that Yosihide had pursued as one of beautiful arts might be the transcendental existence which created the newness from the destruction and the divine existence which had the superiority over the ordinary people.

본 연구는｢地獄変｣에 나타난 그로테스크한 미(美)를 화가인 요시히데와 영주의 대결과정을 통해서 살펴보았다. 요시히데의 예술적인 미라고 하는 것은 결국 아쿠타가와가 1927년에 발표한 작품,｢갓파｣에서 시인 톡크가 말한‘예술은 어떠한 것의 지배도 받지 않는다. 예술을 위한 예술이다. 따라서 예술가인 자는 무엇보다도 먼저 선악을 초월한 초인이지 않으면 안 된다.’라는 것과 깊은 관련이 있다고 본다. 그것은 예술적인 미가 지금까지 ‘진 · 선 · 미’와 함께 인간이 추구해야 할 중요한 가치로 여겨왔던 것이, 근대에 들어와서는 진이나 선에서 분리되어 조화와 균형이 아닌 혼돈과 무질서 속의 기괴함이나 부자연스러움에서 파생된 순간적 미를 예술적 완성으로 추구한 것이다. 그것은 우리들이 일상 세계에서 상상하는 미가 아니다. 인간적인 모든 것을 버린 비인간적, 비사회적인 성격을 통해서만 얻을 수 있는 그로테스크한 미인 것이다. 그러한 점에서 볼 때, 요시히데가 추구한 아름다운 예술, 그로테스크한 미야말로 항상 파괴에서 새로운 것을 창조하는 초월적 존재, 혹은 보통 사람들의 우위에 점하는 가미와자(神業)일지도 모른다
