It can be said that with regard to the elderly’s problems owing to the aging of modern society, executing effective Christianity educational horticultural therapy would significantly affect the elderly’s welfare with the help of the elderly’s health maintenance, prevention of various diseases, and emotional stability. Increases in depression, introvertiveness and passive disposition, and increases in stiffness, cautiousness, and dependence are shown as causes of the elderly’stress according to the aging at senescence. Also, according to the progress of the aging, the retentive faculty, learning ability, thinking ability, problem solving ability, and creativeness start to get weakened. Executing Christianity educational horticultural therapy helps them release their anxiety and tension within the faith community, endure their failures and frustrations, and get increased satisfaction of self-esteem regarding their behaviors and consequences. That is to say, the elderly can feel confidence, self-esteem and responsibility in maintaining plants and observing them grow up. Christianity educational horticultural activities can be easily performed alone but as they are performed under social support such as faith communities, the elderly can learn their roles, how to respect each other’s rights, how to cooperate, and how to share responsibilities. That is, as the horticultural therapy sets up a common objective of members in the Christianity group and work cooperatively, they respect each other’s rights, learn cooperation and responsibility, and improve social skills. The horticultural activity represents meaningful relationship between leisure and life satisfaction, recognizing utilization values of Christianity education and horticultural therapy in the elderly’s welfare, and it is expected that the horticultural therapy will more significantly affect the elderly’s welfare in the future.

현대사회의 고령화로 인한 노인 문제에 대해 효과적인 기독교 교육적 원예치료를 실시하는 것이 노인의 건강유지, 각종 질병의 예방, 정서적 안정에 도움을 주어 노인복지에 중요한 영향을 줄 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 노인은 노년기에 들면서 노화에 따른 스트레스의 원인으로 우울증과 내향성 및 수동적인 성향의 증가를 보이며, 경직성과 조심성 그리고 의존성의 증가를 보이게 된다. 또한 노화가 진행됨에 따라 기억력, 학습능력, 사고력, 문제해결능력 및 창의력이 약화되기 시작한다. 이러한 노인에게 기독교 교육적 원예치료를 하면, 신앙공동체 안에서 노인의 불안과 긴장을 풀어주고, 실패와 좌절에 견딜 수 있게 하고, 자신의 행동과 결과에 대한 자기 존중감에 대한 만족도가 높아지는 효과가 있다. 즉, 식물을 관리하고 성장하는 모습을 보며 자심감, 자부심 그리고 책임감을 느낄 수 있다. 기독교 교육적 원예활동은 쉽게 혼자서 할 수 있는 것도 있지만 신앙공동체 같은 사회적 지지 속에서 이루어지는 활동이기 때문에 자신의 역할을 배우고, 서로 간에 권리를 존중하고 협력하며, 책임을 분담하는 것을 배울 수 있다. 즉, 원예치료는 기독교 집단 내 구성원들의 공동목표를 설정하고 공동 작업을 함으로써 노인 상호간 권리를 존중하고 협력과 책임을 가르치며 사회성을 증진시킬 수 있다. 이러한 원예활동은 여가 및 생활 만족사이에서 의미 있는 관계를 나타내어 노인복지에 기독교 교육과 원예치료의 활용가치를 인지할 수 있으며 미래의 노인복지에 더욱 중요하게 영향을 미칠 것을 예상할 수 있다.
