Garam Lee Byuong Kee has long been known as a scholar who had made a notable contribution to the development of modern style Korean poetry. However, his perspective on Korean literature did not attract much of researchers' concern, when compared with his scholastic fame. Lee’s fame is firmly rooted on his in-depth understanding on the classical literature. He was one of the annotators who critically reviewed the classics and set up the reference of criticism. His scholastic life has undergone a long journey, He originally started from the traditional school, grounded on the sound understanding of linguistics and old poetry. However, before long, he separated from the traditional approach and moved onto the renaissance movement. At the final stage, he was standing on the front line which had dreamed of writing a poem transcendent from the time and space. As a Korean literature scholar, he found out such invaluable writings as Hanjungnok, Inhyun-Wanghujeon, Yeokdae-sijoseon, Euiyudang ilgi, Kunjo-naeganseon, Ou-yadam, and Karujigitaryeong. He also translated and annotated them from a modern perspective. His approach shown in these works could be named as “Seogwongi”.

가람 이병기는 현대 시조 중흥조로, 국문학자로 알려져 있다. 이런 명성에 비해 서지학 자 이병기에 대한 관심은 덜한 편이다. 이병기가 누리는 명성은 그 바탕에 고전에 대한 서지학적 깊은 이해가 깔려 있다. 이병기는 고전을 추적하여 비평의 기준을 세운 주석가이 다. 확실한 어학적 토대와 古歌謠를 깊이 이해한 식견에 바탕 하여 전통에서 출발했으나 그 전통과 결별하고 다시 시류에 초월한 시조 중흥의 위치에 섰다 서지학자로서 이병기가 남긴 업적은 ｢한중록｣ㆍ｢인현왕후전｣ㆍ｢역대시조선｣ㆍ｢의유 당일기｣ㆍ｢近朝內簡選｣ㆍ｢於于野談｣ㆍ｢가루지기타령｣ 등 귀중한 고전문학 작품을 발 굴ㆍ번역ㆍ교주한 점이다. 이병기의 이런 고전 감식안을 ‘書卷氣’로 명명할 수 있다.
