The Bronze Inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty are the oldest written language in China and a stating point of calligraphic history. Yet its calligraphic significance was not profoundly discussed so far. Therefore, to solve this problem, this study focused on the following three aspects. First, the aesthetic consciousness of ancient people is inspected. Second, explored is the artistic beauty of the calligraphic style of the Bronze Inscriptions by clarifying the uses of the bronze wares of the Shang Dynasty different from those of the later ones. Lastly, the distinct features of the characters and the structures of the unfixed forms on the Bronze Inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty are discovered. The study is the first attempt to connect the aesthetic consciousness of ancient people and the meaning of the uses of the bronze wares of the Shang Dynasty with the artistic beauty of its Bronze Inscriptions. By connecting art history, epigraphy, and calligraphic history in a coordinated way, the value and significance of the Bronze Inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty was thus able to be clearly revealed.

商銘文은 중국에서 가장 오래된 문자이며 서예사의 출발점이다. 그러나 아직까지 그의 서예사적인 가치에 대해 깊이 있게 논의된 적이 없었다. 본 논문에서는 이를 해결하기 위해 세 가지 문제에 주안하여 보았다. 첫째, 고대인들의 미의식을 살펴보았다. 둘째, 상나 라 때 사용된 청동기가 후대 청동기와는 달리 특수용도로 사용되고 있음을 밝히면서 청동 기 명문서풍의 예술미와 연결지어 보았다. 셋째, 상명문에 나타난 문자학적 특징과 부정형 의 구조가 주는 의미를 밝혔다. 본 연구는 고대인들의 미의식과 상나라 청동기의 용도의미 를 상명문의 예술미와 연결지으려고 한 첫 시도였다. 미술사, 금석학, 서예사를 유기적으 로 연결지어 봄으로서 상명문이 지닌 가치와 의미를 좀 더 분명하게 밝힐 수 있었다.
