This study investigates the documents related to fishery which were produced in the 15th-19th century for their application to modern times and discusses the following points: Firstly, since the records about fish had first appeared in Kyungsangdojiriji Tosanbu in 1425, names and origins of fish were recorded in many books of various subjects, including geography, history, encyclopedia, agriculture, medicines, anthologies, and bilingual dictionaries, published till the late 18th century. Secondly, since the turn of the 19th century, various general encyclopedias presented the contents related to fish and some specialized encyclopedias of fish were also published. In this study, contents about fish are examined from both general encyclopedias and specialized encyclopedias of fish. Thirdly, in this study Woohaeyieobo, Jasaneobo, and Nanhoeomokji, all specialized encyclopedias of fish, are examined to compare the differences in their background(by areas of investigation, reasons for compilation, and investigation method) and contents(by classification, number of species recorded, writing style, indication of fishery names, content description, and references), and the characteristics and value of each encyclopedia are discussed.

본 연구는 현대적 활용을 위하여 15-19세기의 물고기관계문헌을 대상으로 다음과 같이 고찰하였다. 첫째, 1425년 ｢慶尙道地理志｣ 土山部에 처음으로 물고기 관련 내용이 등장한 이래로 18세기말까지의 지리서, 역사서, 유서, 농서, 의서, 시문선집 및 대역어휘집 등과 같은 물고 기관련문헌에서는 주로 물고기의 명칭과 산지에 대하여 기록하고 있다. 둘째, 19세기 들어 본격적으로 백과사전류가 편찬되면서 다양한 백과사전에서 물고기 관련 내용을 기술하고 전문적인 물고기백과사전도 편찬되었다. 이에 종합적인 백과사전과 전문적인 물고기백과사전으로 구분하여 물고기 관련 내용을 살펴보았다. 셋째, 특히 전문적인 물고기백과사전인 ｢牛海異魚譜｣와 ｢玆山魚譜｣ 및 ｢蘭湖漁牧志｣ 를 대상으로 배경부문(조사지역, 편찬경위, 조사방법)과 내용부문(분류, 수록종수, 문체, 어명표기, 내용기술, 인용문헌)으로 구분하여 비교 분석 후 그 특징과 가치를 논하였다.
