This study aims to explore the characteristics of Balhae’s calligraphy by examining the calligraphic styles of the Epitaph of Princess Jeonghe(780) and the Epitaph of Princess Jeonghyo(792) in the late 8th century. While Chinese and Korean scholars argued their resemblance to the Tang style, the calligraphic styles of these two epitaphs are rather close to those of the Northern Wei. The calligraphic style of the Epitaph of Princess Jeonghae, similar to that of the Stele of Zhang Heinu(531) of the Northern Wei, demonstrates elegance with strength, and the Epitaph of Princess Jeonghyo, close to that of the Epitaph of Cui Jingyong(517) of the Northern Wei, shows free style with energetic irregularity. The calligraphic styles of these two epitaphs should be distinguished from that of Unified Silla which followed the Tang style because of its frequent interactions with Tang. Although Balhae followed the Tang culture of the time in several fields such as painting, literature, and architecture, its calligraphy differs from them in some ways. It can be said that this uniqueness in calligraphic style is the characteristics of Balhae calligraphy.

본 논문의 목적은 8세기 말의 발해 ｢貞惠公主墓誌｣(780)와 ｢貞孝公主墓誌｣(792)의 서 풍을 통해 지금까지 통일신라 서예에 비해 상대적으로 미진했던 발해 서예의 정체성을 찾아보기 위한 것이다. 두 묘지의 서풍은 지금까지의 한․중학계가 주장한 당대 중원의 성당 서풍과는 다르며 오히려 북위 묘지의 서풍과 유사하다. 隸意가 있는 북위 ｢張黑女墓 誌｣(531)를 닮은 ｢정혜공주묘지｣는 우아하면서도 강건하고 변화 속에서도 절제된 느낌을 보여주고 있다. 부분적으로 顔體의 자형도 지니고 있지만 전체적으로는 북위의 ｢崔敬邕 墓誌｣(517)와 유사한 ｢정효공주묘지｣는 ｢정혜공주묘지｣와는 달리 역동적인 불규칙성과 구애받지 않는 자유분방함을 지니고 있다. 두 묘지 다 정연하고 해정한 당나라의 ｢영태공 주묘지｣(706 경)에 비하면 자연스럽고 꾸밈이 없다. 동시대 중원의 풍격과는 다른 발해의 서풍은 문왕대인 8세기 후반 당과의 활발한 교섭 을 통해 성당의 문물을 대량으로 수용했음에도 불구하고 그것을 그대로 모방하지 않은 발해식의 독특한 표현이다. 이러한 발해적 예술 풍격은 당과의 빈번한 교섭을 통해 당의 서풍을 대부분 그대로 수용한 통일신라의 그것과는 분명히 구별되어져야 할 것이다. 본 연구를 통해 발해는 건국 초기뿐만 아니라 당 문화를 능동적으로 수용하던 8세기 후반까 지도 나름대로의 이색적인 서풍을 통해 발해만의 서예술적 특색을 드러내었다는 것을 알 수 있는데 이것이 바로 우리가 찾고자 하는 발해 서예의 정체성이라 여겨진다.
