This study examines the books collected at the libraries of private academies(Seowon) through purchase, donation, publication, or transcription during the Joseon dynasty. The major findings are as follows: First, the books purchased by private academies were mostly Confucian classics such as the Four Books and the Three Classics, and those associated with Neo-Confucian, for teaching Confucianism, and few history books were also included. Second, the books donated by the king to private academies were Confucian classics and Neo-Confucian books for teaching, and those books donated by government agencies were similar. Most of other books donated to private academies were literary collections or biographies of ancient sages. Personal donations also included mostly literary collections and biographies of ancient sages and some Confucian classics for teaching. Third, the books published by private academies were mostly literary collections or biographies of ancient sages who established or were commemorated at those academies, and some Confucian classics, history books, and Neo-Confucian books written by those scholars. A part of the books transcribed were literary collections or biographies of sages commemorated at those academies, but most of them were historically valuable in that the establishment and operations of those private academies, names of students and visitors, and their servants and farming fields were recorded.

본고는 조선조 書院文庫에서 구입과 수증 그리고 자체적으로 간행하거나 筆寫하여 수 집된 도서의 주제를 고찰한 것으로 그 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 서원에서 구입한 도서는 講學의 기본서인 四書三經의 經書類와 朱子學 관련도 서가 대부분이였고, 소수의 歷史書가 포함되었다. 둘째, 서원이 기증받은 도서 중 內賜本의 주제는 강학에 필요한 경서류와 주자학서가 주 종을 이루고 있었으며, 官衙의 기증본도 내사본과 유사한 주제의 도서들이었다. 반면 서원에 서 기증 받은 도서는 先賢의 문집이나 傳記書가 대부분 이었으며, 개인 기증본의 내용은 선현의 문집, 전기서가 우위를 차지하고 있지만 강학에 필요한 경서류도 포함되어 있었다. 셋째, 서원에서 간행한 도서의 주제는 配享者나 設立者와 관련된 선현들의 문집이나 전기가 대부분 이였고, 일부 간행된 강학용의 經書와 史書, 儒家類도 배향자가 저술한 도서가 대부분 이었다. 서원에서 필사한 도서의 주제는 배향자의 문집이나 전기서가 일부 있었지만, 서원의 건립, 운영상황, 입학한 儒生의 명단, 방문자, 奴婢나 田畓 등의 기록을 적은 서원의 사료적인 자료가 대부분이였다는 점이 특징이다.
