This research analyzes the reasons why the method of casting movable types from porcelain clay, which was described in Husaengnok(厚生錄) failed. It also examines the major problems of testing this method, as discussed in my earlier research, and suggests how to improve its efficiencies. By so doing, an attempt was made to build a theoretical base for the fourth test in order to prove the feasibility of this method. Major findings are as follows: First, in the second chapter, the results from the first and second tests which faithfully followed the procedures and practices of casting movable types, as described in Husaengnok, were analyzed. The result shows that, while casting movable types, based on the text of Husaengnok, missed were such factors as ① the technical know-hows about depressed engraving in the fourth stage, ② the process of preparing for the height of individual characters as required after the fourth stage, and ③ how to cut characters in the seventh stage. As a result, the test was not properly done. Second, in the third chapter, in order to solve the problems earlier identified, a test was made to press wooden types on the porcelain clay, by applying the method of inlaying on Goryeo celadon porcelain, when characters from clay mold were engraved. In brief, in the third test, by forming the molds of individual characters, and establishing the method of inlaying characters by pressing them on porcelain clay, it was explored how to cast individual movable types from porcelain clay.

이 연구는 ｢후생록｣ ‘속법주자(俗法鑄字)’에 연원한 도토주조법의 실험주조 연구에서 이미 지적된 문제점 및 그 실험주조에서의 실패 요인을 분석하고, 동시에 이 실험의 효율 성을 제고하기 위한 여러 방안을 강구함으로써, 도토주조법의 실제를 증명하기 위한 차후 제4차 실험주조의 이론적 기반을 마련하고자 하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제2장 ‘도토주조법 제1⋅2차 실험주조 실패 요인의 분석’에서는 ｢후생록｣ 주자조 에 제시된 도토주조법 문헌의 기록에 충실한 제1⋅2차 실험주조를 실시한 결과 및 그 문제 점을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 도토주조법의 원문(原文)의 내용(記錄)에 입각한 그 작업 공정 에 있어서 ① 제4공정에서의 음각에 대한 기술적인 방법론(know-how), ② 제4공정 이후에 요구되는 개개 활자의 높이를 마련하는 공정, ③ 제7공정에서 활자의 자름에 대한 방법론, 등이 누락된 요인(要因)으로 인하여 그 실험주조의 결과가 원활하지 못하였다고 분석하였다. 둘째, 제3장 ‘도토주조법 실험주조의 효율성 제고를 위한 방안’에서는, 제2장에서 제시 된 여러 요인들과 관련한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여, 도토 주형(鑄型)에서 글자(활자)의 완전한 음각화 방안으로써 선각(線刻) 대신 고려청자의 상감기법에 사용된 압각(壓刻)의 방법을 원용(援用)하여, 도토에 목활자를 찍어서 음각화하는 방안을 채택하였다. 요컨대, 본고의 ‘도토주조법 제3차 실험주조’에서는 ‘제1⋅2차 실험주조’에서 문제가 되 었던 도토주조법에서 개별 활자의 몸체 주형(鑄型)을 구현하고, 이와 동시에 압각의 방법 에 의한 각 글자의 완전한 음각화 방안을 확보함으로써, 도토주조법에 입각한 각각의 개별 활자를 주조하는 방법론을 강구하였다는데 그 의의가 있다.
