This research investigates the books published and stored at the seodangs(書堂), elementary schools in the Joseon Period. It has so far been controversial that the seodangs could publish and store books on their own. As a result of examining the collection of books published and stored at the seodangs, it can be concluded that: Twenty titles of books were published by the seodangs in the Joseon Period. Subjects covered collection of writings by Confucian scholars(8), Confucianism(5), genealogy(4), history(2), and military science(1). The places of publication were Kyongsang province(15), Chungcheong province(2) and Kang-won province(1). It is worth important to note that 8 titles (5 Confucianism and 3 Collection of Writings by Confucian Scholars) were published by Pukang seodang(鳧江書堂) in Cheongsong(靑松) District. Therefore, this particular seodang’s publication which amounted to 40% of all, holds the most important place in the seodangs’ publishing. Books were engraved in the 15th century(1), 16th century(1), 17th century(1), 18th century(1), late 19th century(10) and early 20th century(6). 13 titles were published on wood blocks, and 7 titles with wooden movable types. While books on Confucianism were published only by wood blocks, all of the genealogy books were published with wooden movable types. The rest of them were published by both. Out of 13 titles published on wood blocks, wood blocks of 8 titles are still preserved. Wood blocks of 6 titles are stored in Korean Studies Advancement Center(韓國國學振興院), and 2 titles are kept by the descendants. Libraries of seodangs came into existence in the 18th century for the purpose of educating younger people in the families. Among them are the libraries of Im Pil-Dae(任 必大)'s family in Gui-yeon(龜蓮) Eui-seong(義城), Kim Sang-jin(金相進)'s family in Tak-gok(濯谷) Po-eun(報恩). Also there were Hagpo-sa(鶴浦社) in Anpyon(安邊) established in 1807, and Hagog Seodang(霞谷書堂) in Sangju(尙州) which had libraries for students. But records show that only few seodangs had libraries in the Joseon Period.

본고는 조선시대 서당에서 간행한 서적과 수장한 서적에 관한 연구이다. 지금까지 書堂에서 서적을 수장하거나 간행했을 가능성에 대해서는 부정적이었다. 본고에서는 서당에서의 서적 간행과 수장에 대해 고구한 바 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 조선시대 서당에서 간행한 서적은 모두 20종이 확인되었다. 주제는 문집 8종, 병서 1종, 역사 서 2종, 유학서 5종, 족보 4종으로 문집, 유학서, 족보순으로 많이 간행되었다. 지역으로는 경상 도 15종, 충청도 2종, 강원도 1종으로 경상도에서 가장 많이 간행되었다. 서당간본 가운데 괄목 할만한 점은 靑松의 鳧江書堂에서 문집 3종과 유학서 5종, 도합 8종을 간행한 것이다. 이는 서당간본의 4割을 차지하는 수치로 서당간본에서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하는 것이다. 간행시기로는 15세기에 1종, 16세기에 1종, 17세기에 1종, 18세기에 1종, 19세기말에 10종, 20세기초에 6종 간행되었다. 판종으로는 목판본 13종, 목활자본 7종인데, 문집은 목판본과 목활 자본이 고루 활용되었으나, 유가서적은 목판으로만 간행되었고, 족보는 모두 목활자로 간행되 었다. 전래되고 있는 서당간본이 대개 조선말기의 서적이어서 그 판목이 전래되는 것도 있다. 목판본 13종 가운데 8종의 판목이 전래되고 있는데, 문집 2종, 역사 2종, 유학서 4종이다. 6종은 지금 韓國國學振興院에 수장되어 있고, 2종은 후손가에 수장되어 있다. 18세기 전반까지는 훈장의 개인장서를 학동들에게 부분적으로 개방하였을 것으로 보인다. 18세기 후반 同族部落에서 血緣爲主의 書堂인 경우는 문고를 확인할 수 있다. 義城 龜蓮에서 강학에 힘쓴 任必大의 가문, 報恩 濯谷里에서 강학에 힘쓴 金相進의 가문을 들 수 있다. 이외 순조 7(1807)년 安邊府에 설립된 安邊鶴浦社와 尙州의 霞谷書堂에는 소규모의 문고가 있었다. 그러나 확인된 기록은 당시 서당간본이나 서당문고의 일부분일 것으로 추정된다.
