This study is intended to clarify how the book publishing and printing related to the social and political background, and academic activity of King Sejo(世祖) during the reign of King Sejo in Chosun(朝鮮) Dynasty. The summarization is as following. 1. King Sejo concentrated on strengthening royal authority and establishing wealthy country and powerful army to stabilize the shaky social status right after he mounted the throne. However, this policy didn't help facilitating academic culture. The King Sejo studied through extensive academic area and was equipped with sufficient knowledge and experiences before ascending the throne. Even though he didn't do academic activities as a King, but he summoned officials and Confucian scholars and lectured them by himself to promote academic mood. 2. King Sejo considered pen as important as sword, and thought various practical learning including learning of ethics and history. Furthermore, he preferred Buddhism to Confucianism. This view of learning and promotion policy for academy affected the book publishing and printing significantly. 3. The book publishing was broadly not enough to show brisk academic activities. The publishing of military books and the explanatory books for Buddhist literature showed the preference to military and Buddhism. He established Gangyeongdogam(刊經都監) to publish many Buddhism books in wood block printing. This also reflects the pro-Buddhism tendency of the King Sejo.

本 稿는 世祖朝의 圖書編纂과 刊行狀況이 당대의 정치 사회적 배경과 왕의 學術活 動과 어떠한 관련성이 있었는지를 밝혀보고자 연구한 것이다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다 음과 같다. 첫째, 세조는 즉위 초 불안정한 정치 사회적 상황을 강력한 왕권강화와 富國强兵에 주력하여 점차 안정을 가져왔으나, 학술문화 사업의 지원은 미흡했다. 세조는 潛邸時 에 다양한 학문을 두루 섭렵하여 상당한 수준의 지식과 경륜을 갖추고 왕위에 올랐으 나, 즉위 후에는 스스로 君德함양을 위한 학문활동은 거의 하지 않았지만 관료와 유생 들의 학문진흥을 위한 전강의 자리를 마련하여 文風을 振作시키고자 노력하였다. 둘째, 세조의 학문관은 文과 武를 동일하게 중요시하고, 經史를 포함한 다양한 실용 학문을 중시하였으며, 유교보다 불교를 더 숭상한 好佛 性向을 지니고 있었다. 셋째, 도서편찬은 전반적으로 미흡한 편으로 당대의 학술활동이 활발하지 못한 점을 보여주고 있으며, 편찬도서 중 兵書와 佛書諺解書의 편찬이 많은 비중을 차지하고 있으 며, 편찬도서 중 失書와 佛書諺解書가 많은 비중을 차지하고 있으며, 도서간행에서도 佛 書가 다량 인쇄되었던 것은 세조의 崇武的이고 好佛的인 성향과 관련성이 있다.
