The purpose of this study was to examine the possibility of applying the backward class design model to physical education in elementary schools. Based on characteristics and structure of the backward class design model, the model was applied to competitive activities, volleyball-type game in the sixth grade. Through analyzing and recasting the curriculum, teachers were able to understand better the subject content. By developing evaluative criteria, teachers are also able to consider the different traits of each student. In order for ‘a lasting understanding', the key of the backward class design model, teachers became to interact with the students. In comparison with existing models, the backward class design model is more effective in making lesson plans specific and proceed systematically. For students, the backward class design model not only allowed them to clearly recognize objectives and tasks of class, but also helped students to successfully achieve the goals during class. The results also showed that the backward class design model has a great possibility to be applied to physical education in elementary schools.

본 연구의 목적은 백워드 교육과정 수업 설계 모형에 대한 초등학교 체육과에서의 적용 가능성을 탐색해 보는 것이다. 이를 위해 백워드 교육과정 수업 설계의 특징과 구조를 기반으로 초등학교 6학년 경쟁 활동(배구형 게임) 단원을 구안․적용하였다. 교사적 측면을 살펴보면 교사들은 수업의 계획을 위한 교육과정 분석과 교과서 재구성과정을 통해 교과 내용에 대한 충분한 이해를 할 수 있게 되었으며 평가 준거의 개발에 있어서도 다양한 학습자의 특성을 고려할 수 있게 되었다. 백워드 교육과정 수업 설계의 핵심인‘영속적인 이해’를 위해 지속적으로 학생과의 상호작용을 하게 되었다. 기존의 방식보다 백워드 교육과정 수업 설계를 통한 수업 구상이 좀 더 명확한 수업의 설계에 도움이 되었고 수업을 진행함에 있어서도 수업의 흐름을 유기적으로 이끌어 가는데 효과적 이였다. 학생들의 경우는 수업 목표와 평가 과제를 명확하게 알 수 있어 좋았으며, 충분한 활동 시간의 확보로 학습 목표를 성취하는데 도움이 되었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 통해 백워드 교육과정 수업 설계 모형은 우리의 학교 현장에 적용가능성이 크다고 할 수 있다.
