This study explored aspects of place-making of ‘mountain’ on anobject of oral life stories of partisans who took part in the KoreanWar. In a field of geography, there have been steady studies forspace and place. Relying on accomplishment of these studies,recently there have been attempts of studies for space and place invarious viewpoints in a field of literature as well. Space together with time is an important medium to explain theidentity of human beings. Space becomes life background of humanbeings. As significated experience of human beings is accumulated,space becomes a place and the place affects life of human beingsagain. A place is the cumulative results of significated experience ofhuman beings, and an onset from which world’s perception horizongets expanded. We can comprehend traces of life through a place,and aim at present position of subjectivity with which past andfuture are connected. Mountains for partisans during the Korean War at the time werea place to defend their ideology and thought that they chose, and topreserve their lives confronted with the fear of death. Thus,mountains were an important place for partisans. However, partisanshad to remain silent in Korean society after the war. Accordingly, it was quite hard to hear their experiences at firsthand. Instead, massmedia showed pictures of partisans. In this process, the placeness of‘mountain’was embodied together. There has been an indispensableaspect of the fact that the pictures of partisans and the placeness of‘mountain’ were deliberately created by being dominated by thediscourse of the power and the times. This study tries to come out of the pictures of partisans and theplaceness of ‘mountain’ that were drawn by the mass media. Thisstudy explores partisans’ mountain lives through their oral lifestories that were addressed by themselves, and based on theexploration, investigates the placeness of ‘mountain.’ In this way,this study raises problems related with the one way image makingregulated by the mass media and the placeness of ‘mountain,’ and isin a process of exploring a multiple placeness of ‘mountain’ at thesame time.

공간은 인간 삶의 배경이 된다. 인간의 의미화된 경험이 축적되면서 공간은 장소가 되고, 다시금 장소는 인간 의 삶에 영향을 준다. 장소는 인간의 의미화된 경험이 적층된 결과이며, 세계의 인식 지평이 확대되는 출발점 이 된다. 우리는 장소를 통해서 삶의 흔적을 이해할 수 있으며, 과거와 미래를 잇는 주체의 현재적 위치를 가늠 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 한국전쟁 당시 빨치산으로 활동했던 사람들의 구술생애담을 토대로 ‘산’의 장소화 양상에 대해 살펴 보았다. 지리학 분야에서 공간과 장소에 대한 연구는 꾸준히 진행돼 왔다. 이러한 연구성과에 기대어 최근 문 학 분야에서도 다양한 관점에서 공간과 장소에 대한 연구를 시도하고 있다. 공간은 시간과 더불어 인간의 정체 성 해명에 중요한 매개가 되고 있다. 이러한 인식을 토대로 본 연구는 구술생애담 텍스트를 통해서 공간의 장 소화 문제를 다루었던 것이다. 한국전쟁 당시 빨치산에게 산은 자신이 선택한 이념과 사상을 지킬 수 있는 장소였으며, 죽음의 공포와 대면하 면서 삶을 보존할 수 있는 마지막 선택지였다. 그래서 산에서의 생활은 빨치산들에게 매순간 의미가 있었다. 하지만 빨치산들은 자신의 경험을 쉽사리 말할 수 없었다. 한국사회에서 그들은 그림자적 존재로 살아가야만 했다. 대신 다양한 대중매체가 간접적으로 빨치산들의 삶을 이야기했다. 하지만 대중매체를 통해서 형상화된 빨치산의 모습은 시대의 담론 속에서 작위적으로 창출된 경우가 많았고, 더불어 산의 장소성도 규정되었다. 빨치산 구술생애담에서 ‘산’의 장소성 규명은 단순히 공간의 장소화 문제를 이해하는 차원을 넘어선다. ‘산’은 빨치산들의 정체성을 해명하는 매개적 장소로서 가치를 지닌다. 그들이 산에서의 경험을 직접 구술하고, 이를 토대로 ‘산’의 장소성을 밝히는 것은 대중매체 및 이념 담론 속에서 형성된 빨치산의 이미지화를 벗어날 수 있 는 계기가 된다. 더불어 빨치산과 관련된 ‘산’의 대중적 장소성에서 벗어나 다중적 장소성을 인지하게끔 유도 한다.
