Currently metaphors have been used frequently in everyday life as well as literature or academic areas. This study aimed at reviewing basic premises of contextualism which have initiated the current psychological issues and illustrating some cases in which the therapeutic metaphors and stories have been used in the counseling process in order to propose the directions of the counseling in the future. This study has suggested that the use of therapeutic metaphors has been rooted deeply in the history of counseling and that major powerful approaches to counseling, such as expressive art therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and narrative therapy, have used the various types of metaphors and stories as the effective therapeutic means in the counseling process. Also this study has suggested that the use of metaphors in counseling process have been related closely to social constructivism which has taken contextualism as the root metaphor, and have been supported by those contemporary psychological theories, such as positive psychology, strength-based approach, and cognitive perceptual theory. On the base of these findings, this study has reviewed some ways in which counselors has used the therapeutic metaphors and stories in their counseling sessions, and discussed some issues associated with the use of the therapeutic metaphors and stories in the counseling process, including the types of the therapeutic metaphors, the goals and benefits of the use of therapeutic metaphors, and the procedure of metaphoric intervention in the counseling process.

오늘날 은유는 문학이나 학문에서는 물론이고 일상생활에서도 널리 사용되고 있다. 이 연구는 오늘날 심리학의 흐름을 주도하고 있는 맥락주의의 기본 전제와 치료적 은유의 적용 사례를 고찰하여 시대적 상황에서 상담이 나아가야 할 방향을 모색한다. 이 연구는 상담 과정에서 치료적 은유의 사용이 역사적으로 매우 뿌리 깊고 광범위하게 보급되어 왔으며, 특히 표현예술치료, 인지행동치료, 이야기치료 등 현대 상담 접근의 주요 세력들 역시 상담 과정에서 다양한 형태의 은유와 이야기를 효과적인 치료 도구로 사용하고 있다고 확인한다. 이 연구는 또한 상담 과정에서 치료적 은유의 사용이 맥락주의를 근본은유로 채택하고 있는 사회구성주의와 밀접하게 연관되어 있으며 긍정심리학, 강점기반 접근, 인지적 지각 이론 등 현대 심리학의 주요 흐름을 반영하고 있음을 시사한다. 이를 바탕으로, 이 연구는 치료적 은유의 형태, 치료적 은유 사용의 목적과 적용 범위, 그리고 치료적 은유 개입의 절차 및 효과성 등 치료적 은유 사용에 기초한 상담의 새로운 방향을 모색함에 있어 검토해야 할 몇 가지 쟁점을 논의한다.
