The word ‘cabeça’has various meanings, starting from a part of the human body to thought or position, thanks to the extension of the semantic network. Therefore, ‘cabeça’ means a part of the human body, a group leader and also refer to abtract ideas such as thought and the reason, for instance. There are also idiomatic expressions such as ‘passar a mão na cabeça de alguém’ or ‘fazer a cabeça’ and many others. Such a semantic diversity on the word ‘cabeça’ can be explained through metaphore and metonym, which are based on experimentalism, since the physical body is the first contact among all the human experience. In this study, we will observe how the meaning of the word ‘cabeça’ expands, based on the metaphore and metonym. The importance of this study is also in explaining the mechanism of expansion the word ‘cabeça’ in Brazilian Portuguese for Korean students in this language, since many of the expressions has strong Brazilian cultural and social background. While native Portuguese speakers simply use these expressions naturally, these same expressions are never easy to understand for foreign students. Therefore, understanding the semantic expansion mechanism will facilitate Portuguese learning as a foreign language.

A palavra ‘cabeça’ tem vários significados, a começar desde a parte do corpo humano até pensamento ou cargo, graças à expansão da rede semântica da palavra. Assim, cabeça significa parte do corpo humano, o líder de um grupo e pode até se referir a ideias abstratas como o pensamento e a razão, por exemplo. Existem também expressões idiomáticas como ‘passar a mão na cabeça de alguém’ ou ‘fazer a cabeça’ entre outros. Toda esta diversidade semântica da palavra ‘cabeça’ pode ser explicada através da metáfora e metonímia, que se baseam no experimentalismo, já que o corpo físico é o primeiro contato de todas as experiências humanas. Neste artigo, observaremos a maneira com que o significado da palavra ‘cabeça’ se expande, à luz da metáfora e metonímia, da linguística cognitiva. A importância deste estudo está também em explicar o mecanismo de expansão da palavra ‘cabeça’ no português brasileiro para os estudantes coreanos da língua portuguesa, já que muitas expressões tem fortes traços culturais e sociais do Brasil. Enquanto os falantes da língua portuguesa como língua materna simplesmente usam estas expressões como tal, elas nem sempre são compreensíveis para os estudantes estrangeiros. Assim, a compreensão do mecanismo de expansão semântica, facilitará o aprendizado do português como língua estrangeira.
