The study focuses on considering the educational meanings we can find through understanding the Great Absolute theory. that is, the viewpoints on the universe and man in the Sung Confucianism. Since the view of the Great Absolute is recognized as being fundamental in Sung Confucianism, without grasping it, we could not reach the essential points and the whole system of the Confucianism.
The Great Absolute stems from the chapter of Gyesa(繫辭) in Change (周易). It is the basic thing or beginner that all and everything in the universe accrue in. If it is the beginner of the universe, if any, what is that in the educational sphere? In other words, what is the Great Absolute in education? That is the idea of education. Because an education with each purpose or methodology can be practiced according to the educational idea.
Here we will consider the meaning of education in view of the Great Absolute, and it will be also considered what the Korean Educational Idea, Devotion to the Welfare of Mankind(弘益人間), signifies in the viewpoint of the Great Absolute. In addition, it assumes that education itself is a micro cosmos and the educational idea can be an Great Absolute. Finally it will be discussed that the practices and methods of education resemble the cycle or action of Yin and Yang(陰陽)and the Five Elements(五行).

본 연구는 유학［성리학」의 우주와 인간론인 태극론（太極論）을 통해 교육의 세계를 고찰하는 작업이다． 태극론은 성리학의 근원으로 인식되기 때문에， 이를 이해하지 않고서는 성리학의 본원에 이를 수 없고 성리학 전체를 꿰뚫을 수 없다． 태극은 주역 （周易 ）의 계사（繫辭）에서 연원한 것으로 생성과 변화라는 우주의 상황을 형용하며 모든 사물이 귀결할 수 있는 근원처이다. 태극이 우주사물의 근원처라면， 인간의 세계에서 가장광범위하게 이루어지는 교육이라는 소우주에도 그 근원처가 있어야 한다． 교육에서 근원처는 교육이념이다． 왜냐하면 교육은 교육이념에 따라 교육목표와 목적을 제시하고 방법론을 통해 구체적으로 실천되기 때문이다． 본고는 태극론을 통해 교육의 세계를 검토하고 대한민국의 교육이념인 ‘홍익인간（弘益人間）’을 태극론의 관점에서 분석해 본다． 특히 교육이라는 소우주에서 교육의 표준인 교육이념이 하나의 태극이 될 수 있을 것으로 상정하고， 교육의 작용과 방법론이 음양과 오행의 동정（動靜）과 동일하게 이해할 수 있음을 구명하였다．
