This paper tended to analyze the relevance of the emperor-as-a-symbol system of present age Japan, and collective memory, and tended to examine the feature of the community of the memory in Japanese society. Since the emperor-as-a-symbol system’s functioning considering the constitution as the legal basis especially and the Tenno system were functioning not only as mere symbolism but as institutional equipment, it became clear that collective memory could be carried. Therefore, the emperor-as-a-symbol system works as a constituting principle of the memory community of present age Japan, and, moreover, can cause a conservative swing. Thus, probably, the emperor-as-a-symbol system of present age Japan should be cautious of constituting new collective memory.

본 논문은 현대일본의 ‘상징천황제’와 ‘집단적 기억’과의 연관성을 검토하여 일본사회의 ‘기억의 공동체’의 특징을 살펴보고자 하였다. 특히 ‘상징천황제’가 헌법을 법적 근거로 하고 있다는 점, 그리고 천황제가 단순히 ‘상징성’만이 아니라 ‘제도적 장치’로서 기능하고 있다는 사실에서 일본의 ‘상징천황제’는 ‘집단적’ 혹은 ‘문화적’기억을 매개할 수 있다는 사실을 밝혀내었다. 또한 이를 바탕으로 ‘상징천황제’가 현대 일본에 있어서 ‘기억공동체’의 구성 원리로 작용한다는 사실이 결과적으로 우경화의 원인이 되고, 새로운 집단적 기억을 구성하게 될 것이라는 사실에 주목해야 한다는 점을 제언하였다.
