The thesis has examined the characteristics and problems of the description of controversial issues of ancient history of Korea-Japan relations as provided by History of Japan textbook from Fusosha Publishing. The comparison and analysis of the textbooks published between 2001 and 2011 has confirmed that while some terms that were potentially problematic were deleted or modified, the basic tone remained unchanged in that they still emphasized the superiority of Japanese history while disparaging Korean history. In describing the ancient history of Korea-Japan relations, the Japanese textbooks interpret historical artifacts from their perspective to argue for political superiority over the Korean Peninsula, and in description of culture, they ignore or briefly state the influence from those people who arrived from the Korean Peninsula on transmission of diverse institutions and technologies including rice farming, iron tools, earthen tools, and Buddhism, instead stressing the influence from Tang Dynasty. Besides, with regard to Balhae, they do not even mention the kingdom and exclude it from the geographical boundary of the Korean history, which should be corrected in the future. After all, such history textbooks would inspire a historical perspective that places Japan at the center and in a superior position. The ability to escape a description that emphasizes only the stance of Japan is necessary, and future historical progress would be possible only when the two countries concede that differences are inevitable in perceiving historical facts and construing them.

본고에서는 후소샤판 일본 역사교과서의 고대 한일관계사 중 논란이 되는 부분에 나타난 서술의 특징과 문제점을 살펴보았다. 2001년부터 2011년까지 발행된 교과서를 비교 분석한 결과 전체적으로 문제의 소지가 있는 일부 용어의 삭제 혹은 표현만 달리하였을 뿐 자국사 우월성을 강조하거나 한국사를 폄하하는 기본 논조에는 변함이 없음을 확인할 수 있었다. 일본 교과서의 고대 한일관계사 서술에서는 여러 사료를 일본적 입장에서 해석하여 한반도에 대한 정치적 우위성을 주장하고 있으며, 문화적인 서술에서는 도작문화를 비롯 철기, 토기, 불교 등 다양한 제도적, 기술적 문화의 전파에서 한반도 도래인의 영향을 외면하거나 소략하게 기술하면서 당의 영향을 강조하고 있다. 또한 발해와 관련해서는 언급조차 되지 않고 한국사의 영역 표시에서도 제외시키고 있는 점은 앞으로 시정되어야 할 것이다. 결국 이러한 내용의 역사교과서는 학생들에게 자국중심적, 자국우월적인 역사인식을 심어주게 된다. 앞으로 자국의 입장만을 강조하는 서술에서 벗어나 객관화해 가는 기술도 필요하며, 양국 사이에는 기본적으로 역사에 대한 사실 인식과 의미 해석의 차이가 있을 수밖에 없는 현실도 인정하는 태도를 가짐으로써 향후 역사 발전도 가능할 것으로 생각한다.
