The purpose of this study is to compare the relationship emphasized in the care and compassion through the meaning and features of them. Care is based on mutual acceptance and interaction between the parties as it is completed by both the one-caring's engrossment, motivational displacement and receptivity, recognition, response of cared-for. Compassion is a panhuman love to be extended to all living beings and it is the four immeasurable minds collectively called love-compassion-joy-impartiality. Care focuses on a two-way and mutual relationship in a face-to-face meeting but compassion requires the unlimited and indiscriminate expansion by people who acquire the virtue of compassion. Despite this difference, care and compassion emphasize that the relationship is at the core of human existence and Happiness is possible in this relationship.

본 논문의 목적은 배려와 자비의 의미, 특징을 통해 배려와 자비에서 강조하고 있는 관계성을 비교 하는데 있다. 배려는 배려자의 몰입과 동기적 전이, 피배려자의 수용, 인식, 반응을 통해 완성되는 것 으로 배려자와 피배려자 사이의 상호 수용과 반응을 핵심으로 한다. 자비는 자애, 연민, 더불어 기뻐 함, 평온의 네 가지 거룩한 마음가짐을 총칭하는 것으로 모든 생명에게 확대된 사랑이다. 배려가 직접 적인 만남에서의 양방향적이고 상호적인 관계를 강조한다면 자비는 자비를 체득한 사람에 의한 무제 한적이고 무차별적인 확장을 요청한다. 이런 차이에도 불구하고 배려와 자비는 모두 인간 존재의 근 본을 관계성에 두며 인간의 행복이 관계를 통해 가능하다는 것을 일깨운다.
