Traditional Korean patterns are visual materials that effectively express the unique Korean image and represent the symbolism of Korean spiritual values. This paper intends to shed light on the value of traditional patterns and express traditional beauty by combining and embodying the images of traditional patterns. The ultimate purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how traditional patterns can be used as designs applied to polyester scarves by transfer dyeing. The research involves inquiring into the domestic literature and preceding papers and producing polyester scarves featuring a combination of traditional pattern images. This paper examined the concept and classification of traditional Korean patterns, and designed and produced six polyester scarves bearing traditional patterns through transfer dyeing. Through the production of polyester scarves, this research obtained the following findings: First, practical scarves resistant to laundering or wrinkles, set apart from silk scarves, can be made. Second, the appropriate material or technique of transfer dyeing enables traditional patterns to be represented in formative images. Third, it was proven that traditional Korean patterns represent Korean symbolism and lyricism through formative designs. These efforts will hopefully encourage the application of traditional patterns to a variety of materials and designs and more practical fashion items.

한국의 전통문양은 한국적 이미지를 정립하는 좋은 시각적 소재이며 시각적 이미지일 뿐 아니라 정신적 가치를 내 포한 상징성도 전하고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 한국 전통문양의 재조명에 초점을 맞추어 한국 전통문양의 이미지를 조합하고 형상화하여 전 통미를 표현하고자 하였고 나아가 폴리에스테르 스카프에 전사염으로 한국 전통문양을 적용함으로써 한국 전통문 양을 디자인의 소재로 확대시켜 나가는데 연구목적을 두었다. 연구방법은 국내 문헌연구, 선행논문 등을 통하여 고찰하였고 한국 전통문양의 이미지 조합에 의한 문양디자인으 로 스카프 작품을 제작, 제시하고 설문조사를 실시하여 스카프 패턴에 대하여 평가하여 보았다. 연구내용은 한국 전 통문양의 개념과 분류에 대하여 고찰하였고, 폴리에스테르 스카프 작품 6점을 전사염으로 한국 전통문양을 적용시 켜 디자인, 제작하였다. 한국 전통문양을 응용한 전사염 스카프 작품을 통하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 기존의 실크스카 프와는 차별화된 내추성과 내세탁성이 우수한 폴리에스테르를 소재로 한 한국 전통문양 디자인의 실용적인 스카프 작품을 제작할 수 있었다. 둘째, 전사염을 통한 적절한 소재나 기법이 한국 전통문양의 이미지를 조형적으로 표현하 기에 적합하다는 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 셋째, 적용된 한국 전통문양의 상징적 디자인으로 보아 한국 전통문양을 통하여 한국인의 상징적 의미와 서정성을 심도있게 표현할 수 있었다. 한국 전통문양이 다양한 소재 디자인에 적용되어야 한다고 생각하며 이러한 시도가 스카프뿐 아니라 보다 실용적 인 패션 아이템에도 응용되는 기회가 되기를 바란다.
