The Belgian playwright Maurice pondered Shakespeare and Ibsen in order to create a new sort of drama, combining a sense of the nothingness of human life with a sense of some implacable fatality that tortures the wispy, more-or-less non-existent characters. This sort of theatre anticipates that of Yeats, Synge, and, most of all, Samuel Beckett — indeed the labyrinthine designs of Maeterlinck’s castle-sets anticipate the incomprehensible or half-comprehensible plots and settings of many Modernist plays.
