Presbyterian Church of Korea has been done actively social services from the beginning. Presbyterian of Korea which shares the tradition of Presbyterian Church has worked for social service through the union movement. It led translation of the Bible, publishing of Christian documents, and running of education institutes with many missionaries from other denominations. After 1945, liberation from the rule of Japanese imperialism, the tradition of Korean Church's social service developed into rural reconstruction and social welfare mission. This paper focuses on Union Christian Service Center(UCSC) which was established in 1949. This study was designated as a micro-historical study on social services of Presbyterian Church of Korea. The result of this study presents that Union Christian Service Center was the first ecumenical social service institution. Second, UCSC devoted itself to rural reconstruction which was one of main challenges in those days. Last, UCSC expanded the areas of social welfare mission in the early stages of Korean Church. Therefore, UCSC's rural reconstruction and a variety of efforts for social service are the important conferences to making plans for today's social service of Presbyterian Church of Korea.

한국 장로교회는 초창기 선교부터 활발한 사회봉사활동을 전개하였다. 특히 장로교 전통을 공유하는 한국 장로교회는 다른 교파에서 선교사들과 합동하여 성서번역, 기독교 문서 출판, 기독교 교육관 운영 등 연합운동을 통해 사회 봉사에 앞장섰다. 이와 같은 사회 봉사 전통은 1945년 일제 식민지로부터의 해방 이후 농촌 재건과 복지 선교 운동으로 발전하였다. 본 논문은 한국 장로교회의 사회봉사에 대한 미시사적 연구로서 1949년에 설립된 한국 기독교 연합 봉사회(Union Christian Service Center)를 집중적으로 연구하였다. 이 연구를 통해 첫째, 기독교 연합 봉사회는 해방 이후 최초의 에큐메니컬 한 사회 봉사 기관이라는 것과 둘째, 시대적 과제인 농촌 재건과 발전에 주력했다는 것과 셋째, 한국 교회 초기의 사회 복지적 봉사의 영역을 발전적으로 확장하였다는 것을 밝혔다. 따라서 해방 이후 기독교 연합 봉사회의 농촌 사업과 다양한 사회 봉사적 노력은 오늘날 한국 장로교의 새로운 사회 봉사 구상을 위해 매우 중요한 전거가 되는 것이다.
