In 2012, we are going to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the General Assembly of the Korean Presbyterian Churches. Reviewing the last 100 years of the General Assembly, this paper aims to clarify what meaning the event has for the Korean Church, especially for the Korean Presbyterian Churches. To do this, this paper surveys the developmental stages of Korean Presbyterianism. However, after the year of 1959, when the Presbyterian Church of Korea (Tonghap group) emerged, to which this writer belongs, the reviewing of the history will center round the Tonghap group. When we examine the issue of the periodization of the history of Korean Presbyterianism, it must be remembered that in its first stages the history was divided mainly according to the anniversaries of missions, while it has gradually been celebrated according to the anniversaries of the General Assembly. Perhaps this change parallels the decrease of the missions and the increase of the church. With the 100th anniversary coming around, we are hoping for the writing of a common history of the Korean Presbyterian Churches. It is desired that as the centennial of the missions in 1984 inspired the spirit of unity in the Korean Church, so does the centennial of the General Assembly in 2012 in Korean Presbyterianism.

2012년, 한국장로교는 총회 설립 100주년을 맞는다. 본 논문은 총회 설립 100주년을 회고하며, 이 사건이 한국교회, 특히 한국장로교회에 지니는 의미를 살피고자 한다. 이를 위하여 한국장로교의 발전단계를 살펴볼 것이다. 그러나 1959년 교단 분열 이후는 주로 필자가 속한 대한예수교장로회 통합측에 대하여 살펴볼 것이다. 한국장로교의 역사구분을 살펴볼 때, 유의할 점이 있다. 첫째, 한국장로교의 역사 초기에는 주로 선교의 역사를 기준으로 삼았다. 아마도 선교부의 영향 탓일 것이다. 둘째, 한국장로교의 후반에 들어서면서 점차 교회의 역사를 기준으로 삼았다. 이것은 교회의 영향력의 증대와 맞물려가는 현상이라고 볼 수 있다. 한국장로교 총회 설립 100주년을 맞아, 공동 역사를 기술할 것을 기대한다. 아울러, 1984년 선교 100주년이 한국교회의 연합정신을 전반적으로 고취했던 것처럼, 2012년 총회 100주년이 한국장로교의 연합정신을 고취하는 계기가 되길 바란다.
