The goal of this study is to analyze the characteristics of middle school moral training textbooks in the period of modern enlightenment, and deduce moral educational implications of these books. As there are 3 types of typical moral training textbooks for middle schools in the period of modern enlightenment(1894-1910), they are 『Middle School Moral Training textbook』, 『High Elementary Moral Training Book』 and 『Ethics textbook』. The production period was ‘time of Residency-General encroaching educational administration’ of 1906-1910 and the main producer was the scholars of the era related to private schools. This study has examined the composition and contents of these textbooks first, and has looked at by classifying into 4 kinds the overall features penetrating the 3 types. First, these textbooks discussed current circumstances in Korean Empire back then with a critical eye and second, they also actively reflected ideas of modernization and democratization in the West. Add to that, third, these textbooks emphasized how intelligence, affection and will should be combined to each other and fourth, the textbooks developed what they had to say with an extension structure of life spheres. Nextly, the study has deduced about the moral educational implications of these middle school moral training textbooks in the period of modern enlightenment. First, when it comes to verify how traditional education is related to moral education of the modern times, the three middle school moral training textbooks are able to make a contribution to some degree. Second, since these texts would focus especially on value and virtue, they could be used as a source book on 18 ideas of value and virtue that would form moral subject of today and another value and virtue necessary for our life. Third, these texts have been written in some powerful words that touch feelings and hearts of humans. For that reason, they are determined good enough to be used to describe value and virtue related to feelings and hearts as consideration, filial duty and life respect.

본 연구의 목적은 근대계몽기 중등용 수신교과서들의 특징을 분석하고, 나아가 이 서적들의 도덕교육적 시사 점을 도출하는 것이다. 1894년에서 1910년에 이르는 근대계몽기의 중등용 수신교과서는 총 3종으로서, 『중등수신교과서』, 『고등소학수신서』, 『윤리학교과서』가 그것들이다. 제작 시기는 1906-1910년에 해당하 는 통감부 학정 잠식기이고, 제작 주체는 사립학교와 관련된 당대의 지식인들이었다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 이 서적들의 구성과 목차를 검토한 뒤, 3종을 관통하는 전체적인 특징들을 살펴보았다. 첫째는 이 서적들이 당시 대한제국의 상황을 비판적인 관점에서 바라보았다는 것이고, 둘째는 서양의 근대화와 민주화 관련 개념들을 적극 반영하였다는 것이다. 셋째는 이 서적들이 지․정․의(지․덕․체)의 통합을 강조하였다는 것이고, 넷째는 삶 의 영역에 대한 확장 구도를 통해 내용을 구성하였다는 것이다. 이 같은 분석 아래, 본 연구에서는 근대계몽기 중등용 수신교과서들이 지니는 도덕교육적 시사점을 도출하였다. 첫째는 전통교육과 현대 도덕교육의 연속성 을 검증하는 과정에서 3종의 중등용 수신교과서들이 일정 이상의 기여를 할 수 있다는 것이다. 둘째는 이 서적 들이 다양한 가치․덕목들의 집약처인 까닭에 도덕과의 기반이 되는 18개의 가치․덕목과 기타 우리 삶에 필요한 가치․덕목들의 자료집으로 기능할 수 있다는 것이다. 셋째는 이 서적들에서 엿볼 수 있는 인간의 감정과 정서 에 대한 호소력 있는 글쓰기 방식을 배려나 효도, 생명존중 같은 감정 및 정서 관련 가치․덕목들을 기술하는 데 차용할 수 있다는 것이다.
