This study aims to examine the thoughts of Edith Stein in order to find out a thread of hospice philosophy in them,focusing on the connectivity between the thoughts of Stein and the hospice activities and thus endeavoring to establish a theoretical and philosophical foundation of hospice activities, by applying the anthropology of Stein (an integrated viewpoint of human being as an individual through body philosophy) to the hospice activities which involve caring for patients in extreme pain as well as patients with terminal illnesses facing death. First of all,this study pursuits Stein’s integrated viewpoint of human being as an individual, which is suggested by hospice activities that had started from a truthful humanistic movement to restore the original human nature. Through the study, it has been found that both (a viewpoint of human being suggested by hospice philosophy and that by Stein) could be standing on a common existential and spiritual ground which overcomes the view of humans as biological beings. And on the other hand, through a form of empathy containing ‘feeling of oneness’ and ‘feeling of togetherness’ based on love, a theoretical foundation of hospice was explored and a possibility of hospice philosophy based on the thoughts of Stein was investigated by considering why this (viewpoint of human being and activities required by the hospice)is connected with Stein’s philosophical anthropology.

이 글은 슈타인의 사상(그 중에서도 단일－존재로서의 몸철학을통한 통합적 인간관)을 오늘날 죽음을 앞둔 말기환자와 극심한 고통 속에 있는 환자를 돌보는 호스피스 활동에 적용시키는 것에 그일차적 목적을 두었다. 그리고 다른 한편으로 슈타인의 사상과 호스피스 활동과의 연관성을 조망함과 동시에 호스피스 활동의 철학적 이론 기반을 모색함으로써 슈타인 사상에서 호스피스 철학의한 가능성을 고찰하는 데 또 하나의 의미를 두었다. 본 글은 우선사람됨으로서의 본래적 인간성을 그대로 회복하자는 휴머니즘 운동으로부터 출발한 호스피스 활동에서 제시하는 인간관이 생물학적－의학적 인간이 아니라 철학적－해석학적 인간이고, 한 부분으로서 분석 가능한 인간이 아니라 통합성으로서만 이해 가능한 인간임을 강조하는 데서 출발한다. 그리고 호스피스에서 제시하는인간관의 이론적 근거를 슈타인의 단일체로서의 통합적 인간관에서 모색하였다. 이러한 고찰을 통하여 양자가(호스피스 철학에서제시하는 인간관과 슈타인이 제시하는 인간관) 오늘날 육체 중심으로만 인간을 이해하려는 생물학적 인간을 넘어서는 존재론적, 영성적 측면을 지닌 통합적 인간관을 강조한다는 점에서 그 공통점을타진할 수 있었다. 그리고 또한 슈타인의 박사논문 <감정이입의 문제>에서 제시된 사랑을 바탕으로 한 ‘하나로 느낌’과 ‘더불어 느낌’이라는 감정이입 내지는 공감의 형태를 통하여 호스피스 활동의 실천적 토대를 마련하였으며, 이것이(호스피스에서 요구하는 인간관과 실천적 활동이) 왜 슈타인의 사상과 연관되는지를 조망함으로써슈타인 사상에서 호스피스 철학의 한 가능성을 살펴보았다.
