Whitehead analyzes the heterogeneous becoming on the base of the concept of actual entity or occasion which is understood as an atomic event. In his metaphysical system, our actual world is regarded as a field of creative advance that is constituted of actual occasions. And actual occasion itself is also a field of creative advance in which the occasion in order to realize its own subjective aim selects, modifies, excludes, and finally unifies the various data delivered from the past. All of these operations includes negative prehension which is the result of a subjective decision of the occasion. Negative prehension occurs in both the process of appropriation and the process of self-realization. In the former, it reduces the initial data to the objective data by rejecting some incompatibles in the initial data, and prepares the materials for self-constituting. And in the latter, it promotes conceptual reversion, transmutation, propositional feeling, and intellectual feeling, through which the subject introduces the non -actualized eternal objects, and then contrasts the contrasts of these possibilities with a nexus in the objective data. Owing to these feelings with negation, actual occasion become a novel entity differentiated from all other occasions in its own actual world. Further, actual occasion may negate and modify its own initial aim which is derived from God’s subjective aim, and thus become an agent of absolute difference that could never be explained by any category. For Whitehead, therefore, it may be said that all occasions deviate from the past actual world in terms of their own negation, and realize such self-differentiation as some patrons of the de-constructive thinking insist

화이트헤드는 원자적 사건으로서의 현실적 계기를 중심으로, 현실세계의 과정을 합리적 범주 속에 포섭한다. 그의 범주체계에서현실세계는 현실적 계기들이 역동적인 상호작용을 통해 추동하고있는 이질적 생성의 장으 로 나타나 있다. 단위 생성의 주체인 현실적 계기는 주어진 다양한 여건들을 선택하고 수정하고 제거하고통합 하는 주체적 결단을 통해, 통일된 주체의 산출이라는 주체적이념의 요구에 부응한다. 부정작용(negation)을 필요한 까닭이 여기에 있다. 주어진 여건들 가운데 양립 불가능한 것, 경험의 강도(intensification)를 약화시키 는 것을 제거할 필요가 있기 때문이다. 그리고 이런 부정작용 때문에 계기는 자기실현의 목적론적 과정에서는 물론이요 사유화의 인과적 과정에서조 차 이미 과거 여건의단순 반복일 수 없다. 현실적 계기는 본질적으로 주어진 여건과 차별화되는 것, 요컨대 차 이의 구현자일 수밖에 없다는 것이다. 이렇게 화이트헤드는 부정작용에 힘입어 이질적 생성을 합리화한다. 그리고 이런 의미에서 그의 철학은 동일성의 철학이다. 그러나 그가 말하는 부정작용은 여기에 머물지 않는다 . 그것은 현실적 계기가 신에게서 수용한 자신의 주체적 이념 자체를 배제하고 수정하는 통로가 되기 때문이 다. 이때의 주체적 결단은 더 이상 준거를갖지 않는다는 점에서 절대적이며, 따라서 이 결과로 빚어지는 차이 는 합리적 도식 밖에 머문다. 오히려 그것은 이 도식 체계 자체의 합리적 기획에 도전한다. 그것은 생성하는 존재의 보편적 특성으로서, 고등한 유기적 사건존재는 물론이요 기본적인 물리적 사건존재까지도 과거 여건 으로부터의 일탈자, 현재에 있어서의 차이구현자로 만든다. 따라서 화이트헤드에게서 부정적 파악은 헤겔의 추상적, 논리적 부정과 구별되는 살아 있는 부정으로서 한편으로는 그의 철학을 동일성의 철학으로 이끌고 다 른 한편으로는 그의 철학을 진정한 의미의 창조성의 철학, 곧 차이의 철학으로 이끌고있다고 말할 수 있다.
