The integration of faith and reason is a significant issue for Christian higher education. Although the colleges and universities of U. S. began with educating Christian leaders and pastors, they have failed to integrate faith and learning. As a result, faith has been isolated from the ivory tower in U. S. From 1950s a reaction to the trends in higher institutions occurred, and the attempts of integration drastically spread through and affect diverse discipline areas. For this reason, this study literally examines the integration of faith and reason in U. S. higher education historically and theoretically. Then, it suggests integrative ways, and applies the integrative ways to a specific area of psychology.

신앙과 이성의 통합이라는 주제는 대학교를 중심으로 한 기독교 고등교육에 가장 중요한 이슈중의 하나이다. 역사적으로, 미국의 대학들이 신앙교육을 위해 세워졌지만 이들이 신앙과 이성 혹은 학문의 통합에 실패함으로 말미암아 미국 고등교육 기관에서 신앙과 이성은 대립하여 왔고, 급기야 신앙은 대학이라는 상아탑에서 논외의 것이 되어왔다. 이 런 현실에 대한 반작용으로 1950년 이후로 시작된 신앙과 이성의 통합 움직임은 이론적 으로는 신앙과 이성의 통합에 대한 세계관과 전제들의 차이를 조명하고, 실천적으로는 구체적인 제 학문 영역의 통합을 시도하고 있다. 이에, 본 연구는 미국 고등교육에 있어 서 이성과 신앙의 통합에 대해 역사적으로, 이론적으로 그 배경을 개관하고, 통합을 위 한 세 가지 주요한 이론을 제시한다. 아울러, 이를 바탕으로 실제 학문의 영역인 심리학 과목에서기독교신앙(신학)과의통합을실례로제시하여그적용가능성을논해보았다.
