While oral tales in the region of Gyeongju(경주) show the openness and aboriginality which tales have, they have a characteristic that person tales(48.7%), natural tales(32.7%), human tales(18.5%) appear. Those tales, which don’t show any transmission aspect lopsided toward a single type, have interests in various things ranging from the basic natural environment of the region to the presentation of ideas about what cultural foundations are. They have recognized and shared their concerns with natural environments on which they have lived through tales, which they have served as a momentum to recognize their own regional uniqueness, and added meanings to their natural environments. Recorded tales in the region of Gyeongju(경주) person tales(63.1%), human tales(31.5%), natural tales (5.2%) appear. It can be said that what is most striking from this phenomenon is that humanistic tales stress the characteristics of Buddhism. They have so positively accepted and changed the Buddhism- related elements which have been accumulated by this region and still have an absolute influence on it that those elements have been able to melt into tales. In particular, as these aspects are vividly shown in recorded tales, their intention could be confirmed to put the cultural role or function recorded tales have played on the Buddhism-related magnetic field. The tales in the region of Gyeongju(경주) have characteristics as a valuable cultural asset from which various elements like vitality and transmission power possessed by tales can be extracted. Instead of staying on regionalism, they show multiple layers of meanings by enhancing national and historic consciousness. In addition, many tales intend to establish natural characteristics and cultural meanings by exploring them. They have a countless number of issues by which to delve into what tales’ essential characteristics are because they are superbly diverse in terms of their diversity and transmission aspect.

경주 지역 구비 설화는 설화가 가진 개방성과 원시성을 보여주면서 인물 설화(48.7%), 자연 설화(32.7%), 인 문 설화(18.5%)의 순서로 나타난다. 지역민들은 자신의 주변에 접하는 인물에 대한 관심을 가장 많이 보여주 고 있다. 그 이외에도 그들은 자신이 터를 잡고 살아가는 자연 환경에 대한 관심을 설화를 통해 인식하고 공유 해 나가면서 지역이 가진 고유성을 인식하는 계기로 삼았고 지역이 가진 자연적 환경에 의미 부여를 하기도 했다. 일상에서 접할 수 있는 기본적 요소에 대해 많은 관심을 갖고 그것에 대해 그들 나름의 특성을 부여하고 지역의 동질성을 확보하려는 경향을 보였다. 경주 지역 기록 설화는 인물 설화(63.1%), 인문 설화(31.5%), 자연 설화(5.2%)의 순서로 나타난다. 이에서 두 드러진 것은 인문 설화가 부각한 점인데 인문 설화에는 불교적 성격을 강조하다는 특성을 보인다. 이 지역이 과거부터 축적해 왔고 지금도 그 영향력이 절대적으로 작용하는 부분 가운데 하나인 불교적 요소를 적극적으 로 수용하고 변용하여 설화에 잘 녹아들게 하였다. 이런 점은 기록 설화에서 두드러진 경향을 보여 기록 설화 가 맡은 문화적 역할이나 기능을 불교적 자장에 두고자 한 의도를 확인할 수 있다. 경주 지역의 설화는 설화가 가진 생명력과 전승력의 다양한 요소를 추출해 볼 수 있는 소중한 문화적 자산으 로서의 특성을 갖고 있다. 지역성에만 머물지 않고 민족의식과 역사의식을 고양하는 등으로 의미의 층위를 다 양하게 펼쳐 보인다. 뿐만 아니라 자연적 특성을 탐구하기도 하고 문화적 의미를 탐색하고 정립하려는 의도를 지니기도 한다. 이 지역의 설화는 특성의 다양성뿐만 아니라 전승의 양상도 특이하여 한국의 설화가 가진 본 질적 성격이 어떠한지를 탐구해 볼만한 문제들을 무궁하게 가지고 있다.
