This paper explores the issue of how hospitality knowledge is created in the context of generic theory. Specifically it demonstrates how the evolution of concepts and underpinning theory may not be matched by empirical studies in the hospitality field. The limited scale of hospitality research may mean that only some elements of theory are selected or applied to this field. It demonstrates and illustrates this phenomenon by considering the theory of international expansion choice, developed to understand franchising system and internationalization, in which six schools of thought have evolved over time. The purpose of this study is to examine the transaction cost analysis and international expansion of hospitality business. It analyzed various internationalization theories and proved TCA might be the most useful to explain international hospitality franchising. TCA identified the uncertainty, firm specificity and free-riding potential variables that influence the choice of firms' international expansion. It suggests how the evolution of internationalization theories may be applied to international hospitality development strategy decision.

이 연구는 일반적인 비즈니스 이론을 호스피탈리티 분야로 확장하여 활용할 수 있 을지에 대한 시도이다. 한정된 호스피탈리티 분야의 연구를 활성화시키기 위해서는 다 양한 분야의 이론을 적용시킬 필요가 있다. 특히, 기존 비즈니스 이론의 개념을 진화 시켜 호스피탈리티 실증연구에 활용하기 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 한다. 본 연구의 목적은 거래비용분석(TCA)을 이용하여 호스피탈리티 사업의 국제적인 확 장을 설명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 다양한 국제화 이론을 분석한 결과 거래비용분석 (TCA)이 다국적 호스피탈리티 기업의 프랜차이징 방식을 설명하기에 가장 유용하다는 것을 입증했다. 거래비용분석은 불확실성, 회사의 특이성, 잠재적 무임승차 변수 등이 국제적인 확장에 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여주고 있다.
