In interpretations of Zhongyong, one of the major classics in Confucianism, someone argues that is a book that suggests practical ethics of political leaders but actual research trend on it has been mainly about philosophical approach so far. Thus this study, unlike other existing research, is based on the premise that the concrete goal of Zhongyong is realization of ‘Zhongyong politics,’and examines principles and planning of ‘Zhongyong politics’ and concrete practical ethics and characteristics in completion of ‘Zhongyong politics,’ acknowledging the need for approach in a dimension of active political ethics. What Zhongyong politics seek is to realize politics that restore human nature and this is neither abstract nor absolute but it is with timeliness(時中) which puts emphasis on optimum of circumstances and Bi-i-eun(費而隱, signifying that the way of a noble man is both wide and subtle) and altruism which are of universal and original characteristics as well are with the feature of Seo(恕, tolerance) as same with self-love and its ultimate completion is obtained through Seong (誠, sincerity), the constant practice.

이 논문은 유교의 중요 고전의 하나인『중용(中庸)』에 대해 적극적 인 정치철학서로 독해한 것이다. 지금까지는 대체로, 서두에서는 정치 지도자의 실천윤리를 제시한 책이라고 하면서도, 본 연구에서는 개인 의 윤리서로 접근하는 경향이 강하였기 때문이다. 이를 위해 여기서는 『중용』의 구체적인 목표가 ‘중용정치’실현에 있음을 전제하고, 이러한 ‘중용정치’의 원리와 효용, ‘중용정치’의 성격과 실천과정을 고찰하였 다. 그 결과 ‘중용정치’는 상황의 최적(最適)을 중시하는 시중(時中), 보 편적이면서도 근원적 성격의 비이은(費而隱), 자기애만큼의 이타성이 요구되는 서(恕)의 성격을 지니고 있음을 밝혔다. 또 그 실천에 대해서 는 구경(九經)과 달도(達道)/달덕(達德)의 내용을 통해 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 중용정치의 완성에 대해서는 쉼 없는 실천인 성(誠)을 통해서 가능하다고 주장한다고 평가하였다.
