This essay is aimed at making clear what The Doctrine of the Mean insists on, by means of investigating the issue and it`s solution suggested in this book. Tao having not realized in individual and social level is the issue suggested in The Doctrine of the Mean. To solve it, this book suggests a solution that there should be a sage having virtues of great sincerity, and the system by which the sage becomes a king,Totally The Doctrine of the Mean is oriented at the subject of making peace of the world, that is, to make the world in which sky and earth are in correct order and all creatures are flourishing. Heaven(天) has given human beings the nature(性), therefore human beings should achieve the virtue of 'equilibrium and harmony'(中和) and 'the doctrine of the mean'(中庸) by virtue of 'being watchful over oneself when alone'(愼獨) and sincerity(誠) in following one`s nature. That is the way of being a sage. Then, heaven(天) and spiritual being(鬼神) makes one a king. As a result, the word becomes peaceful. But heaven(天) and spiritual being(鬼神)`s making a sage a king is what ought to be realized, is not what is realized. By this reason, The Doctrine of the Mean suggests 'sage king theory'(聖人帝王論), that is, a sage should be a king. The Doctrine of the Mean tries to make this theory actualized, relying on the will of heaven(天) and piritual being(鬼神).

『중용』은 여러 가지 이유로 이해하기가 쉽지 아니한 책이며, 이 책의 ‘작자, 편제 및 주장사항’에 대하여 여러 이견이 존재한다. 이러한 까닭에 본 논문은 과연『중용』은 무엇을 말하는 책인가를 알아보기 위하여 『중용』의 문제의식과 그 해법을 살펴보았다. ‘개인적⋅사회적 차원에서 도(道)가 실행되지 않는’ 것이 『중용』의 문제의식이며, 이를 해결하기 위해서 지성(至誠)의 덕을 갖춘 인물[聖人]이 존재해야하고 그가 제왕이 되는 시스템이 갖추어져야 한다는 것이 『중용』이 제시한 해법이다. 전체적으로 『중용』의 내용은 ‘천하화평’ 즉 ‘천지(天地)가 제자리를 잡고, 만물(萬物)이 잘 자라나는 세상 만들기’라는 주제를 향해 있다. 하늘이 인간에게 성(性)을 부여하였으니 인간은 ‘성(誠)⋅신독(愼獨)’의 자세로 수신하여 ‘치중화(致中和)⋅중용(中庸)’의 덕을 갖추어서 성인(聖人)의 경지에 들면 ‘하늘과 귀신’이 그를 제왕으로 만들고 그 결과 세상은 화평해진다는 것이 『중용』의 요지이다. 그런데 ‘하늘과 귀신이 성인을 제왕으로 만드는 것’은 소당연(所當然)의 일이지 소실현(所實現)의 일이 아니다. 『중용』은 하늘과 귀신의 뜻에 기대에 성인이 왕이 되어야 한다는 성인제왕론(聖人帝王論)을 주장하여 소당연을 소실현으로 만들고자 하는 것이다.
