The purpose of this study was to confirm the mediating effect of children's self-esteem on the relationship between their self-encouragement and school-life adjustment for exploring the relation variables of children's school-life adjustment. For this research, the self-encouragement inventory, the self-esteem inventory and the school-life adjustment inventory were administered to 467 children in fifth and sixth grade at elementary schools in Gyeonggi and Incheon. The summary of this study's result was as follow. First, as the result of the correlation analysis between the major variables, children's self-encouragement showed positive correlation with their self-encouragement and school-life adjustment. Second, in the analysis of the mediating effect of children's self-esteem between their self-encouragement and school-life adjustment, the result showed that the self-esteem had a partial mediating effect on the relationship of the self-encouragement and the school-life adjustment. Therefore, it supported the assumption that it was important to train children to have high self-encouragement or to have high self-esteem in order to help their school-life adjustment.

이 연구는 아동의 학교생활적응과 관련이 있는 변인을 찾기 위한 것으로 아동의 자기격려와 학교생활적응의 관계에서 자아존중감의 매개효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구목적을 달성하기 위해 경기, 인천지역의 초등학교 5, 6학년 학생 467명을 대상으로 자기격려 검사, 자아존중감 검사, 학교생활적응 검사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 자기격려와 자아존중감, 자기격려와 학교생활적응, 그리고 자아존중감과 학교생활적응간의 관계 모두 정적으로 유의미한 상관관 계를 나타냈다. 둘째, 자기격려와 학교생활적응과의 관계에서 자아존중감의 매개효과를 검증 한 결과 자아존중감은 자기격려와 학교생활적응의 관계에서 부분 매개효과를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구결과는 아동에게 자기격려를 훈련하게 하거나 자기격려를 통해 자아존중감 을 높이는 것은 아동의 학교생활적응을 도울 수 있다는 시사를 준다.
