‘눈썹’(‘eyebrow’ in Korean) came from ‘눈섭’ of Korean language in the late middle ages. In order to find out the original meaning of ‘눈썹’, it is necessary to track the original meaning of ‘눈’ and ‘섭’ in ‘눈섭’. In the case of the ‘눈’(‘eye’ in Korean), it has clear meaning even though it is not easy to trace the origin of the word. As for the ‘섭’, it is not easy to track both the meaning and the origin of the word. Therefore, to trace the meaning and the origin of ‘눈섭’, it is the best way to track the original meaning of ‘섭’. So far, in general, the meaning of ‘섭’ has been ‘薪’(‘Shin’ in China, which means ‘firewood’ in Korean, and the Korean people call the ‘firewood’ ‘섭’(sup)) or ‘邊’(‘Byen’ in China, which means ‘the edge of something’ in Korean). In this thesis, it is the main purpose to verity whether this existing theory is true or not. In order to verify the corelation between the ‘섭’ in ‘눈섭’ and the ‘섭’ of ‘薪’, verifying methods likes the use sound tone, word form, and word formation process have been applied. And, in order to verify the corelation between the ‘섭’ in ‘눈섭’ and the ‘섶’ of ‘邊’, the methods like meaning connection and word formation process of ‘눈섭’ have been applied. By studying, it can be concluded that the ‘섭’ in ‘눈섭’ does not have the same root meaning with the ‘섭’ in ‘薪’ nor with the ‘섶’ in ‘邊’. Instead, in this thesis, the ‘섭’ of ‘눈섭’ has the meaning of ‘毛’(‘Mo’ in China, which means ‘hair’ in Korean). It can be explained that the ‘섭’ which means ‘毛’(hair) had disappeared long time ago, and then its trace could be found in the word ‘눈섭’. The word ‘섭’ meaning ‘毛’(hair) can be found in the word ‘섭조개’(a blue mussel, which attaches to rocks and gets food with its thin hairy organ) and, in the word ‘섭조개’, the word ‘섭’ has the meaning of ‘毛’(hair) clearly. Granting that the ‘섭’ of ‘눈섭’ has the meaning of ‘毛’, the word ‘눈섭’ can mean ‘hair on the protuberant part of upper eyelid’ that the word ‘눈섭’ can represent the appearance of the object(‘눈썹’ in modern Korean).

현대국어 ‘눈썹’은 후기중세국어에 ‘눈섭’으로 나온다. ‘눈섭’은 ‘눈[眼]’과 ‘섭’이 결합된 형태이다. 그러므로 ‘눈썹’의 어원 구명은 ‘눈’과 ‘섭’의 어원을 찾는 것으로써 시작된다. 그런데 ‘눈’의 경우는 그 의미는 분명하지만 그 연원을 찾는 일이 쉽지 않으며, ‘섭’의 경우는 그 연원은 물론이고 그 의미를 밝히는 일도 쉽지 않다. 그리하여 ‘눈섭’의 어원을 찾는 일은 결국 ‘섭’의 의미를 구명하는 쪽으로 좁혀진다. ‘섭’의 의미에 대해서는 ‘薪’ 또는 ‘邊’으로 보는 설이 일반적이다. 본고에서는 우선 이와 같은 어원설이 타당한지를 살펴보았다. ‘눈섭’의 ‘섭’이 ‘薪’의 ‘섭’과 관련되는지를 성조, 형태, 조어적 측면에서 비교하여 설명하였으며, 그 ‘섭’이 ‘邊’의 ‘섭’과 관련되는지를 의미 관련성, 조어적 측면에 초점을 두어 살펴보았다. 그 결과 ‘눈섭’의 ‘섭’은 ‘薪’이나 ‘邊’으로 해석되지 않는다는 결론을 내렸다. 그 대신 ‘눈섭’의 ‘섭’을 ‘毛’의 뜻으로 파악하였다. ‘毛’의 의미를 갖는 ‘섭’이 일찍이 소실되고 그 흔적을 ‘눈섭’에 남긴 것으로 본 것이다. ‘毛’의 의미를 갖는 ‘섭’의 흔적을 ‘섭조개’에서도 찾아내어 ‘눈섭’의 ‘섭’이 ‘毛’의 의미를 지님을 보다 분명하게 드러내었다. ‘눈섭’의 ‘섭’을 ‘毛’의 뜻으로 보면, ‘눈섭’은 ‘눈 위에 난 털’로 해석되어 지시물의 모습과 부합한다.
